People Who Live Past 110 Share One Odd Immune Trait

People who live past 110 carry far more of one rare killer immune cell. Here is what the new study found, what it proves, and what it quietly does not.

Ask almost anyone how a person reaches 110, and you get some version of the same answer. Good genes. Simple food. A body that somehow slipped past the wear the rest of us collect.

It sounds right. Based on the newest blood work, it is probably backwards.

On 19 August 2026, a team led by Kosuke Hashimoto at the University of Osaka published a study in the journal Cell Reports that read the immune systems of some of the oldest people alive, one cell at a time. What stood out was not calm. It was activity — a particular kind of immune cell, present in unusual numbers, whose whole job is to find cells that have gone wrong and destroy them.

The oldest people in the study were not the least damaged. They had the biggest clean-up crew.

What the study found in people who live past 110

The researchers took blood from 28 people and sorted them into three groups: 8 adults in the 70-to-90 range, 10 centenarians aged 100 to 109, and 10 supercentenarians aged 110 and over. Then they read more than 43,000 individual T cells.

They were watching a cell called a CD4 T cell. Normally these are the organisers of the immune system. They spot a problem and call in help. Under ordinary conditions they are not the ones doing the killing.

In the oldest people, a large share of them had become killers anyway.

The median share of CD4 T cells that had turned cytotoxic — able to destroy other cells directly — came out at roughly 4% in the 70-to-90 group, about 9.6% in the centenarians, and about 17.6% in the people past 110.

That is not a slow, even climb across a lifetime. It stays uncommon for decades, then rises sharply right at the far edge of human age.

Not an army. A few cells, copied over and over.

Every single sample showed the same pattern, and it is the part that changes how the finding feels.

The killer cells were not a broad, varied force. They were copies. A small number of original cells had found something worth responding to and multiplied themselves into a crowd — what immunologists call clonal expansion.

The largest single clone averaged about a third of a person’s CD4 killer cells — 33.3% — and in one centenarian, one clone accounted for 53.8% of them.

Picture a building with one maintenance worker per floor. Now picture a building where half the staff are the same specialist, hired again and again, because the same fault keeps turning up. The second building is closer to what these blood samples look like.

The detail that is easy to read past

Here is the part that stops you.

The researchers compared the receptors on these cells — the part that decides what a T cell recognises — against a public database of sequences catalogued from other people. Around thirty of them matched sequences recorded in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer, breast cancer, and liver cancer.

None of the very old people in the study had been diagnosed with any of those cancers.

The authors are careful here, and so should we be. A matching sequence in a database does not prove the cells were responding to the same thing. They say so directly: the overlap does not demonstrate shared targets. It is a resemblance, not a result.

But it is a striking resemblance. Cells that look like they had been working on something, carried by people who never got the diagnosis.

The same cells have a darker side

This part rarely makes the headline.

That same class of cell — a CD4 cell that has turned cytotoxic — has been linked in other research to inflammatory and autoimmune disease, where the immune system starts destroying tissue that was never the problem.

The researchers name it themselves: in ageing, these cells may be a double-edged sword.

So the finding is not “more removal is better”. A system built to identify what is broken and take it out is only ever as good as its aim. Aimed well, it clears the damage. Aimed badly, it becomes the damage.

What this study does not show

It is worth being blunt about the limits, because “the immune cells of people who live to 110” is exactly the kind of headline that becomes a supplement advert by the weekend.

Twenty-eight people is a very small group. It is small for a good reason — people past 110 are genuinely rare, and getting blood from ten of them is difficult work — but it is still small, and small groups produce patterns that sometimes do not hold. The same caution applies here as with the gut bacteria and grip strength finding: a real, measured association is not the same as a cause.

The team also looked only at cells circulating in blood, not cells living inside organs and tissue, and they say plainly that they do not know what these cells are doing elsewhere in the body. Some of the testing was done on cells stimulated in a dish rather than watched at work inside a person.

And Hashimoto states the bottom line himself: the findings do not establish that high levels of these cells protect against cancer, or directly help anyone live longer.

One more thing most of the coverage left out. This is not a bolt from nowhere. The same lead author reported an early version of this finding back in 2019, working with just seven supercentenarians. The 2026 study is larger, and it adds the age brackets that show where the shift actually happens. That makes it a confirmation rather than a discovery — less exciting, considerably more trustworthy.

What it does line up with is a run of recent work suggesting the immune system keeps learning far later than anyone expected. “Immune aging is not simply a process of decline,” Hashimoto says; even in extreme old age, it may still be adapting. That is the same direction as the finding that a compound from yeast retrained immune cells to fight cancer — the half of the immune system we called forgetful turning out to remember.

There is no instruction hiding in any of this. Nothing to buy, take, or start on Monday.

What changes is the picture of a long life

Most of us imagine extreme old age as preservation. A body that got lucky and stayed intact.

The blood says otherwise. By 110, a person has collected more cellular damage than almost anyone else alive. What seems to travel with them is not the absence of damage. It is the presence of something that never stops removing it. Not a body that was spared — a body still being worked on.

Something similar turned up when researchers went looking for why the eyes of Greenland sharks barely age. The answer, again, was not that nothing goes wrong in them.

Which is a strange thing to find in a blood sample, because it is not a new idea at all. There is an old strand of thought, far older than immunology, that says the outside of a person wears down on a schedule nobody can stop — and that what keeps someone whole underneath is not a clean record, but a renewal that has to happen again today, and again tomorrow, and never finishes. Ancient writers set that down as a description of how God works inside a person. It reads, without a word changed, like a description of what these researchers found in the blood of people past 110.

Same shape. Different microscope.

Where that leaves the rest of us

You cannot order more of these cells, and this study does not tell you how to get them. What it offers is smaller and better than a formula: a different picture of what growing old actually is.

Not a slow surrender. Not a running total of things you are losing.

Something inside you is, right now, going through what has gone wrong and working on it — and in the people who go the furthest, that work does not wind down. It steps up.

What are CD4 cytotoxic T cells?
CD4 T cells are immune cells that normally act as organisers — they recognise a threat and signal other cells to respond, rather than attacking anything themselves. A CD4 cytotoxic T cell is one that has taken on the ability to destroy damaged or abnormal cells directly, a job usually done by CD8 cells. This is unusual under ordinary conditions and becomes much more common at extreme old age.

Why do people who live past 110 have more killer immune cells?
Researchers do not yet know why. A 2026 study in Cell Reports from a University of Osaka-led team measured the pattern but could not explain its cause. The leading idea is that decades of accumulated cellular damage keep triggering the same immune response, and the cells that answer it multiply as copies of themselves over many years. Whether those cells help produce the long life, or are simply a by-product of it, is unresolved.
