There is a book sitting on your table. You are about forty pages in. You started it three weeks ago, and every evening you mean to pick it up, and every evening you pick up your phone instead.

You used to read whole books. Not slowly. Not with effort. You would sit down after dinner and look up and it would be midnight. That person feels like somebody else now.

So you ask the question a lot of people are quietly asking: why is my attention span so short? And the answer waiting for you almost everywhere is that screens have damaged your brain, and you now have the focus of a goldfish.

That answer is wrong. Not slightly-oversimplified wrong. The number it is built on does not exist.

Why Is My Attention Span So Short? The Number Everyone Quotes Isn’t Real

You have seen the claim. The human attention span has dropped to eight seconds — one second worse than a goldfish.

It traces back to a 2015 report from Microsoft Canada. That report did not measure anything. It pointed at a website called Statistic Brain. When a BBC investigation went looking in 2017 for the actual research behind the figure, the sources listed could not produce any. One of the two sources behind the number was reportedly an analytics report about twenty-five people leaving websites they did not like, back in 2008.

The goldfish half holds up no better. Researchers use goldfish in learning experiments precisely because the fish remember things over days and weeks.

Be careful about what this does and does not prove. It does not prove that nothing has changed. It proves that the single most repeated fact about your attention was never a fact at all. That is worth knowing, because you have probably been using it to describe yourself.

What Researchers Actually Measured

There is real work here. It is just quieter than the goldfish.

Gloria Mark, an informatics researcher at the University of California, Irvine, has spent roughly two decades watching people work, using software that logs every time a person switches from one screen to another.

In fieldwork done in 2003 and published in 2004, office workers stayed with one screen for about two and a half minutes before switching away. In her studies from around 2016 onward, that average had fallen to about 47 seconds, with half of all attention periods lasting 40 seconds or less.

Now read carefully what that number is. It is the time an office worker spends on one screen before switching to another screen. It is not a ceiling that has grown inside the human brain. Mark herself has been clear about this — the finding describes behaviour in a particular environment, with email and messages arriving all day, not a new biological limit on what a person is capable of.

That distinction is the whole article, really. A damaged brain and a practised habit look identical from the inside. They have completely different futures.

The Part Almost Nobody Repeats

Here is where this stopped being a story about your phone.

Workplace studies have repeatedly found that close to half of the interruptions people experience are not done to them at all. They are self-interruptions. Nothing pinged. Nobody walked over. The person simply left the task.

In 2011, Laura Dabbish, Gloria Mark and Victor González published an analysis of 889 hours of observed task-switching from 36 people across three organisations, trying to work out why people do this to themselves. One of their findings, in their own words: external interruptions experienced in the previous hour “significantly increase the incidence of self interruption in the subsequent hour.”

Their reading of it was careful: “people may be conditioned to self-interrupt. By experiencing external interruptions they may become habituated to self-interrupt.”

Sit with that for a second. Being interrupted teaches you to interrupt yourself. The habit keeps running after the interrupter has gone home. You can put the phone in a drawer and the reflex still fires, because the reflex was never in the phone. It is in you, and it got there by practice.

They found something else worth knowing too: people sitting in open-plan offices interrupted themselves at a noticeably higher rate. And to their credit, the researchers said plainly that a large share of the variation was still unexplained. This is one study’s interpretation, not a settled law of nature. But it is a real measurement of real people, which puts it several rungs above the goldfish.

So Nothing Actually Broke

That is the part worth taking home.

You did not lose the ability to read a book. You spent years practising the opposite skill, and you got good at it — because you had to. When a moment goes slow, you find something faster. That is a trained response. And trained responses are the only kind you can actually do anything about.

The unfinished book on your table is not evidence that something in you is gone. It is an honest record of what you have been practising instead. Those are very different things to be holding.

How to Get It Back

None of this costs money, needs an app, or requires anyone’s permission.

  1. Re-read something you already love. A new book asks two things of you at once: stay still, and decide whether this is worth staying still for. A book you already know only asks the first one. Start where the cost is lower.
  2. Put the phone in another room, not face down. Face down on the table is a decision you have to keep making, every few minutes, all evening. In another room, you made it once.
  3. When the itch comes, read one more page. Do not fight the urge — you will lose, and then you will feel bad, and feeling bad is its own distraction. Just outlast it by a single page. The urge has a shape. It rises and it passes, and the page is usually longer than the urge.
  4. Read before the day fragments you. If being interrupted is what teaches you to interrupt yourself, then twenty quiet minutes before anyone else is awake are worth more than an hour at the end of a chopped-up day.
  5. Count pages, not minutes. Minutes invite you to check the clock, and checking the clock is a switch. Pages only go one direction.

This Is Not a New Problem

It is tempting to think this began with the phone. It did not. People were writing about the mind that will not stay put long before there was anything electronic to blame, which is why the feeling of being bored with everything has such an old and detailed paper trail. And most people, handed a genuinely empty evening, discover they do not really know how to rest either. The phone made an old problem cheaper to act on. It did not invent it.

What strikes me is the shape of what people have always done about it. Sitting still. Saying the same few words slowly, over and over, until they stop being words you are reading and start being words you are in. Waiting on God with nothing happening and no sign that anything will. Long before anyone could measure a screen switch, none of that was treated as wasted time. It was treated as training — the thing that made a person steady enough to be any use to anybody else. Nobody had the research. They had just noticed that a person who can sit in silence can usually sit with everything else too.

You do not have to do anything with that. It is simply that the cure people reached for, for thousands of years, turns out to be the same shape as the one the research is pointing at now: small, repeated, unstimulating stretches of time, on purpose.
