Today, we’re reflecting on a moment that has captured the imaginations of believers for centuries – the story of Jesus walking on water, found in Matthew 14:22-33. This remarkable event is not just a display of divine power, but a rich source of inspiration for our daily lives.
After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends his disciples ahead of him on a boat while he dismisses the crowd. Later, as the boat is battered by the waves, Jesus walks towards them on the sea. The disciples are terrified, thinking they see a ghost. But Jesus says, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
Peter, ever the bold one, asks Jesus to command him to come on the water too. And he does! Peter walks on water towards Jesus but soon falters, overcome by fear and doubt, and begins to sink. He cries out to Jesus, who immediately reaches out, saves him, and gently reproaches him for his doubt. Together, they return to the boat, and the wind ceases. The disciples worship Jesus, proclaiming, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
At its core, this story is a profound lesson on faith and fear. Jesus walking on water is a powerful sign of his divine authority over nature. Peter’s initial step out of the boat is a leap of faith, but his subsequent fear is a reminder of our human frailty. This story teaches us that faith, even as small as a mustard seed, can accomplish the impossible, but it also shows us how easily fear can shake our confidence.
How often do we find ourselves in situations where taking the next step seems as impossible as walking on water? It could be a personal challenge, a professional risk, or a leap into the unknown. The lesson here is not just about the power of faith to carry us through the impossible but also about the importance of keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. When we focus on our fears, we sink; when we focus on Christ, we find our footing, even in the most tumultuous waters.
Take a moment to reflect on a time when you had to step out in faith, perhaps a moment when you felt like Peter, called to step out onto the water. How did fear influence your actions? What happened when you focused on those fears compared to when you focused on your faith? Write about this experience and how you might approach similar situations differently in the future.
Let’s pray:
“Dear Lord, like Peter, I often feel the call to step out in faith, yet I am also quick to notice the stormy waves beneath my feet. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on You, trusting in Your strength rather than my own. When fear and doubt overwhelm me, remind me of Your presence, that I may walk with confidence and faith. Thank you for Your unending support and for always being there to catch me when I falter. Amen.“
Thank you for joining me today as we walked through the story of Jesus and Peter on the water. It’s a reminder that faith requires us to take steps, even when we’re not sure where our foot will land.
Let’s carry this lesson into our week, stepping out in faith, with our eyes fixed on Jesus, confident that He will guide us through every storm.
Until next time, keep walking in faith.
Be Blessed
