What Jesus teaches about Leadership

Introduction

Leadership is a dominant theme in our world today, spanning various sectors such as business, politics, and even in our own personal lives. But if we want to truly know what good leadership looks like, there’s no better person to learn from than Jesus Christ himself. He remains one of the greatest leaders of all time, displaying a form of leadership grounded in love, humility, and service. Jesus’ leadership model is a golden standard for us to follow. He championed a unique style and it is our aim, as aspiring Christian leaders, to emulate His methods and teachings.

So, let’s delve deep into His word and let it inspire us to lead as Jesus led—with love, compassion, humility and true sense of selflessness. Whether you’re in a leadership role or not, these lessons can significantly enrich your life.

Bible Verse

Mark 10:43-45 : “But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Meaning

This verse showcases Jesus’ view on leadership—one that radically differs from worldly standards. Instead of focusing on power, prestige and dominance, He emphasized humility and service. He portrayed leadership as a role of serving others, not being served. In fact, Jesus himself served as the ultimate example of this.

Serving others does not mean positioning oneself beneath others, but to lend assistance, help lift others, and prioritize their well-being over personal gain. Being a leader, according to Jesus, involves empathy, understanding, sacrifice, and most importantly, love. These qualities make a true servant leader.

Actions to Take

  1. Identify areas in your life where you can serve others more.
  2. Volunteer in local charities, church activities or community projects.
  3. Practice active listening when someone shares a problem or concern with you.
  4. Show empathy and understanding towards everyone you interact with.
  5. Regularly read the scriptures about Jesus’ leadership and servitude to continually learn from His example.
