James 4:7 meaning, in short: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” is not two separate commands you can take in any order. The word therefore ties it to verse 6, and in Greek the word for submit and the word verse 6 uses for God resisting the proud are built on the same root. This short Bible study walks through what that root shows, what to do with James 4:7 this week, and a prayer built from the verse’s own words. It’s for anyone who keeps losing the same fight and wants to know where to stand first.

What does James 4:7 mean?

Here is the verse in the King James Version: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Most of us hear two commands there and jump straight to the second one, the fight. But James wrote them in an order, and that small word therefore points back to what he had just said. In James 4:6 he quotes the Scripture that says “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”

James was writing to believers who were quarrelling, wanting what they didn’t have, and asking God for the wrong reasons (James 4:1-3). So the command to submit in James 4:7 was written to people who had been fighting the wrong battles.

Submit and resist: one root, two directions

In Greek, the word translated resisteth in verse 6 is antitassetai, from antitassō (Strong’s G498), and the word translated submit in verse 7 is hypotagēte, from hypotassō (Strong’s G5293). Both are built on the same root, tassō, a word that means to arrange or to line up. God lines himself up against the proud, so James says to line yourself up under God.

There are only two places to stand, and only one of them puts you on God’s side of the line. That’s why the order matters: you stand under God first, and then you stand against the devil from there. The word for resist in James 4:7, antistēte, means to stand against, and Peter uses the very same word in 1 Peter 5:9: “Whom resist stedfast in the faith.” (For the other half of verse 6, the humble, see the Greek word for humility.)

What to do with James 4:7 this week

Pick the one temptation that keeps winning, whether it’s the late-night scroll, the sharp reply, or the thing you promised you’d stop. Before you fight it, settle the first half of the verse and say out loud, “God, I’m under you on this one, and I’m not running it myself.”

Then make the stand physical: put the phone in another room, delete the draft, or leave the place where it usually happens. The very next line, James 4:8, tells you where to walk instead: “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” So spend the minutes you got back with him, even if you only read James chapter four once, slowly. You’ll probably have to do it again tomorrow, and that’s what standing looks like.

A prayer from James 4:7

Father, we’ve been fighting battles on our own, and we’ve been losing them. We put ourselves under you now, not because we’re strong, but because you give grace to the humble. Help us stand against what pulls us from you, and when it comes back tonight, help us stand again. Draw near to us as we draw near to you. Amen.
