Bible Verse

Ephesians 4:11-12 (NKJV) reads, “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”

Meaning

This passage emphasizes how God intentionally gifts people differently to benefit the Body of Christ – the Church. God, in His wisdom, knows that for the Church to function effectively, diverse talents and gifts must be deployed. Just as a human body needs different parts to work in synchronization, so does the Church need apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to equip the saints for ministry work and edify the Body of Christ.

Prominently, the essence of these gifts is for the equipping of believers for ministry and the building up of the Church. This implies that the roles mentioned are not just for personal edification, but rather for teaching, correcting, guiding, and inspiring others. These gifts help to mature the body of Christ, bringing unity and wholeness as each part does its work.

Actions to Take

  1. Identify your spiritual gifts: Every believer is uniquely gifted to edify the church. Find out what your spiritual gifts are and use them in serving the Body of Christ.
  2. Pray for guidance: Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in understanding your role in the Church and how you can effectively use your gifts to edify others.
  3. Join a ministry: Seek ways to use your spiritual gifts within your local church or other faith communities. This could be teaching Sunday school, leading a prayer group, or participating in outreach programs.
  4. Seek mentorship: If you’re unsure about your spiritual gifts or how to use them, seek mentorship from church leaders or other mature believers.
