Devotional: Exploring Dominion Theology – Understanding Faith, Authority, and Stewardship in Contemporary Christianity

Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:26-28 (ESV)

"And God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’"

Understanding Dominion Theology

Dominion Theology is a complex and often controversial aspect of contemporary Christianity, fundamentally rooted in the biblical notion of stewardship. When God created humanity in His image, He granted us the divine authority to steward the earth. This authority embodies our call to govern wisely and responsibly, reflecting God’s character and purpose in every sphere of life.

1. Faith and Authority

Dominion is not about exerting power for personal gain but rather about exercising authority in a way that mirrors God’s heart. Jesus modeled this beautifully during His earthly ministry, emphasizing servanthood and sacrifice over domination. As followers of Christ, we are called to represent His love and justice in our communities. This means:

  • Acknowledging our role as co-creators with God in nurturing relationships, communities, and environments.
  • Advocating for social justice and caring for the marginalized, as Christ did, thereby restoring the brokenness in our world.

2. Stewardship and Responsibility

In contemporary society, stewardship transcends environmental care; it permeates social, economic, and relational dimensions. To have dominion means to act as responsible caretakers of God’s creation:

  • Practicing sustainable living by making conscientious choices about our consumption and waste.
  • Engaging in acts of service that promote the well-being of others—volunteering, supporting local initiatives, or organizing community clean-ups.

God’s Fingerprints in Dominion Theology

As we explore this theology, let us recognize God’s fingerprints present in creation. Each element—land, water, flora, and fauna—bears witness to His glory and design. Dominion is evidenced in stories of redemption and restoration found within our communities. For instance, the countless efforts made by individuals and organizations to combat climate change, protect endangered species, and uplift those living in poverty exemplify the expression of God’s love through stewardship.

Inspiring Action

Here are practical steps to embody Dominion Theology in your daily life:

  1. Educate Yourself and Others: Take time to learn about issues such as climate change, social justice, and local community needs. Share this knowledge in your circles to raise awareness.

  2. Engage in Creation Care: Participate in or initiate projects focused on environmental stewardship, such as tree planting, beach clean-ups, or creating a community garden.

  3. Advocate for Justice: Use your voice to support policies and practices that promote equity and justice. Visit local government meetings, support marginalized communities, or volunteer for organizations that work towards social change.

  4. Pray for Guidance: Daily, seek God’s wisdom in how you can live out your dominion as a faithful steward. Ask Him to show you specific ways to exercise authority that reflects His love and grace.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for creating us in Your image and entrusting us with the stewardship of Your creation. Help us to understand the weight of this responsibility and inspire us to act in ways that reflect Your heart. Guide our actions as we strive to nurture our communities and care for the earth. May we be vessels of Your love and instruments of Your peace in a world needing restoration. Amen.

Closing Thought

As you reflect on the principles of Dominion Theology, ponder your personal responsibility to engage with faith, authority, and stewardship fruitfully. God has empowered us to make a difference and asks us to align our actions with His will. Let us rise up as faithful stewards today—proclaimers of hope, advocates for justice, and caretakers of His creation.
