Beefalo DNA: Most Have No Bison Ancestry at All

A genome study of 47 registered animals found most beefalo DNA holds no bison ancestry at all, plus a second surprise the researchers were not looking for.

There is an animal whose entire name is a claim about its family tree. Beefalo — beef plus buffalo. The name does the explaining for you: part domestic cattle, part American bison, bred deliberately through the twentieth century to put the toughness of a wild animal into a farm animal people would actually want to eat.

Then somebody sequenced the genomes.

Most of the beefalo they tested had no bison ancestry at all. Not a small amount. None that the sequencing could find.

What the beefalo DNA study actually found

The work was led by evolutionary biologist Beth Shapiro at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and published in eLife in June 2026. The team sequenced whole genomes from 47 registered Beefalo, along with a small number of bison hybrids and commercial bison for comparison.

Of those 47 animals, 39 carried no detectable bison ancestry. The other eight did carry some — between roughly 2 and 18 percent, by the team’s analysis. The American Beefalo Association’s own breed standard asks for three-eighths bison ancestry, which is 37.5 percent. Not one animal in the dataset reached it.

“It was a surprise to us to discover that most of the Beefalo individuals we sequenced did not have detectable bison ancestry,” Shapiro said of the result.

The samples matter here, and the researchers are careful about this. Most of the DNA came from preserved semen held in a government germplasm collection, gathered in the 1970s and 1980s — around the time the breed was being founded. Several of the founding animals are in there, including a bull named Joe’s Pride. So this is, above all, a picture of where the breed began.

The detail nobody went looking for

Here is the part that mostly did not travel with the headlines, and it is the more interesting half of the study.

Thirty-eight of those same animals carried ancestry from zebu cattle — the humped, heat-tolerant cattle of South Asia, and now much of Africa and South America — in proportions the team measured at roughly 2 to 38 percent. The researchers suggest that this cattle-to-cattle mixing may be part of why the breed looks the way it does.

Read that slowly, because it changes the story.

These animals were not ordinary. They genuinely were something crossed with something else. They genuinely did carry a hardy, distinctive, imported bloodline that most cattle in that part of the world do not have. It simply was not the bloodline printed on the certificate.

The beefalo was not a fraud. It was misfiled.

Which side of the family the story came from

The sex chromosomes added another layer. Every Beefalo in the sample carried a Y chromosome belonging to ordinary taurine cattle. Where bison ancestry did turn up, the pattern pointed to bison bulls being bred to cattle cows rather than the other way around — and even then, less bison ancestry showed up on the X chromosome than across the rest of the genome.

Worth noting too: the “-falo” half of the name was never quite right either. American bison are not buffalo. True buffalo are the water buffalo of Asia and the African buffalo — different animals on different continents. The name was already carrying one inaccuracy before genetics arrived to find a second.

The gene flow actually ran the other way

This is where it gets genuinely strange.

In 2022, a team at Texas A&M University led by James Derr and Brian Davis compared bison genomes against those of more than a thousand domestic cattle and reported that every bison genome they analysed carried small but clearly identifiable regions of cattle DNA — including animals from herds long assumed to be clean, such as Yellowstone. It traces back to the deliberate crossbreeding of the late 1800s, when the bison had been hunted to the edge and the only animals available to rebuild herds came largely from private ranches.

So put the two findings side by side. The animal named after bison has, in most of the sampled cases, no bison in it. And the bison, quietly, carry cattle.

The lineage everyone was watching went the opposite direction from the one on the label.

The breeders disagree, and that part is not settled

The American Beefalo Association has pushed back. Its president, Dan Stricker, said: “We have serious concerns that the samples used in Dr. Shapiro’s study do not accurately represent modern, registered Beefalo,” noting that animals registered as full-blood are required to pass DNA testing at commercial laboratories confirming bison ancestry.

That objection deserves to be stated fairly, because the researchers say something compatible with it. They note in the paper that they did not sample present-day Beefalo producers exhaustively, having chosen to focus on animals at or near the founding of the breed, and that a broader sample of current herds would give a fuller picture.

Both things can be true at once. The founding stock can look one way in the data while today’s registry looks another. What the study establishes is narrower and sharper than “beefalo are fake”: in this set of 47 mostly founding-era animals, the bison ancestry the name promises was largely absent. Where the modern herd sits is a genuinely open question, and it is more honest to leave it open than to round it off.

An identity that outlived its paperwork

What nobody disputes is the odd position the animal ended up in. For half a century the beefalo has been real, useful, hardy and valuable — while the story told about where it came from was, for a great many of them, not accurate.

And nothing about the animal changed when the results came back. Same size. Same temperament. Same field.

People carry a version of this quietly all the time. The family name that turns out to have been borrowed or changed at a border. The ancestry test that returns a continent nobody expected. The parent who was never actually the parent. The heritage you were raised inside and then found out you had been given rather than born into. It can feel like the floor moving, because so much of what we are handed as identity arrives as a claim about blood.

It is an old idea, and one of the more stubborn ones, that this has it backwards — that the identity that actually holds was never the inherited kind in the first place. The thread runs right through ancient wisdom and it always lands in the same place: you are not, at bottom, what your bloodline certifies. You are who God claims. Named on purpose, chosen rather than merely descended. That kind of identity is conferred, not inherited, and the quiet strength of it is that no laboratory result can revoke it. Then the thought passes, and the beefalo is still standing in the field.

What the paper changed, and what it didn’t

A genome study rewrote a breed’s documents. It did not touch the breed.

That gap — between the record and the thing itself — is worth sitting with, because most of us live somewhere inside it. Plenty of people quietly suspect their credentials overstate them, or that the version of themselves on paper and the version in the mirror are not the same animal. Science is unusually good at this particular move. It does it to fossils, to star charts, to the dates on cave paintings, and now to a herd of cattle in the western United States. A long-accepted description turns out to be wrong, and the world it described carries on exactly as before, entirely unbothered, waiting for the description to catch up.

The beefalo never read the certificate. It was only ever being itself.
