At about 5 a.m. on Wednesday, 16 September, the water in Wichita, Kansas stopped pushing.
It was only for about 45 minutes, and the water did not have to look any different for it to matter. By breakfast, the city had put its water customers, around half a million people, under a boil water advisory. Some schools cancelled classes for the day.
If you are wondering how less than an hour led to a Wichita boil water advisory, the answer is one of the quietly surprising facts about the water that comes out of your tap. A water pipe does not stay clean because it is clean. It stays clean because it is pushing.
What Happened in the Wichita Boil Water Advisory
On Tuesday night, storms moved through the area. Out of caution, the city switched its main water treatment plant and the Hess pump station over to backup generators.
Around 5 a.m., those backups failed. According to the City of Wichita’s notice, a malfunction in the backup power system cut power from two generators and kept two more from starting. The system lost pressure for about 45 minutes, until staff brought the power back by hand.
The advisory covered all of the city’s water customers and its wholesale customers, which include nearby communities that buy Wichita’s water. Those communities were told to check their status with their local water system. Public Works Director Gary Janzen said the city is working out why the generators failed.

Why a Boil Water Advisory Follows a Loss of Pressure
Here is the part most people never get told.
The pipes under a city are not perfect. Big water networks have small cracks, worn joints and loose seals somewhere. Normally that does not matter much, because the water inside is under pressure. It is pushing outward all the time. If there is a tiny gap, clean water leaks out through it.
When the pressure drops, that can flip. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that a loss of pressure may cause water and contaminants to move from outside the pipe to the inside, through cracks, breaks or joints. Low or no pressure can also cause back-siphonage, where water gets pulled backward into the lines, like a drink going back up a straw.
So the same small gaps that were harmless a minute ago can become a way in. The pipe did not get any dirtier. It just stopped pushing.
That is why the order is called precautionary. It does not mean anyone found germs in the water. In Wichita’s case, Janzen told KMUW that the water leaving the plant was not contaminated. But the computers that watch water quality were also down during the outage, so there was no data from those minutes. The city could not vouch for what might have got into the lines. Staff collected samples from 195 sites across the service area to find out.
The Backup Was Switched On to Be Safe
One detail from this story is easy to read past, and it is the most human part of it.
As far as the city knows, nothing went wrong with the normal power supply. The generators were only running because someone was being careful about the storms. Then the careful choice became the weak spot.
And when the backups failed, the system could not fall back to the normal supply. “It’s not set up to kick back to primary power,” Janzen told KMUW. “Unfortunately, as far as we were aware, primary power was available.”
The main power was there the whole time. The system just was not set up to switch back to it on its own. Janzen also said there were “obviously issues with the alerting” that the city will be digging into.
This is not a story about blame. The plant is more than 80 years old, and a new one is not due to open until 2027. People made a sensible call on a stormy night, and a machine let them down. It happens to cities, and it happens to the rest of us.
What to Do During a Boil Water Advisory
Wherever you live, these are the basics the City of Wichita gave its customers. They are the same kind of steps most water authorities ask for:
- Boil water for one minute before drinking it or using it for food. Or use bottled water.
- Throw out ice made during the advisory, and do not use an automatic ice maker.
- Clean dishes safely. The city suggests a rinse with a bleach solution of 1 teaspoon per gallon, which is about 5 ml of bleach in 4 litres of water.
- Bathing is fine, but keep an eye on young children so they do not swallow the water.
- Wait for the all-clear from your water authority before going back to normal.
A Pipe Is Not Kept Safe by Having No Cracks
There is something in all this that goes beyond water.
A lot of us try to stay safe the way we imagine pipes stay safe. We try to seal every crack. We guard against every worry, every bad influence, every thing that might get in. We run on backup, bracing for the storm, and wonder why we can’t relax even when we have free time.
But the pipe is never kept safe by being perfect. It is kept safe by what is pushing out from inside it.
There is an old line of ancient wisdom that says the same thing about people. It says love, when it is full, drives fear out. Not that fear is walled off, or that the cracks get sealed. That love, filling a life, pushes outward until fear cannot find a way in. And that love, the old writers said, comes from God.
When the Pressure Comes Back
In Wichita, the pressure came back after 45 minutes. The water started pushing again. Now the city waits for the lab, the samples get counted, and life goes back to normal one tap at a time.
Most of us will have our own mornings when the pressure drops, when we run low and things we would rather keep out start seeping in. It does not mean we are ruined. It usually means we need to be filled back up, and to start pushing outward again. That is closer to hope than to optimism, and the difference between hope and optimism matters more than it sounds.
Boil the water for now. The pressure is back on.
