ElevenLabs Launches ‘1 Million Voices Initiative’ at SXSW to Restore Lives Through AI Voice Technology
At this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW), ElevenLabs, an innovative AI audio company, unveiled an impactful initiative aimed at transforming the lives of individuals experiencing permanent voice loss. Partnering with Rebecca Gayheart Dane, widow of the late actor Eric Dane, the company announced the ‘1 Million Voices Initiative,’ which aspires to provide free AI voice restoration to one million people worldwide.
During a panel at SXSW, ElevenLabs co-founder Mati Staniszewski encouraged attendees to identify individuals suffering from voice loss, particularly those affected by cancer or other medical conditions. Potential participants can express their interest through an online form. “Our goal is to restore the joy of communication,” Staniszewski emphasized, reinforcing the human connection that comes through voice.
Gayheart Dane, who witnessed her husband’s decline due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), shared a deeply personal perspective on the matter. ElevenLabs aims to collaborate with disability foundations, including the Scott-Morgan Foundation, to locate individuals who could benefit from this technology. Through the use of a voicemail or short video, their AI tools can authentically replicate a person’s voice, enabling real-time communication. The company also launched the docuseries 11 Voices, showcasing the stories of individuals like Yvonne Johnson, a woman living with ALS who has successfully used ElevenLabs’ technology to regain her voice.
