April Drug Alert: 60 Medicines Flagged as Substandard Raises Health Concerns

In a concerning development for public health, India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has identified 60 medicines, including pivotal eye drops and intravenous (IV) fluids, as "Not of Standard Quality" (NSQ) in its April alert. This announcement comes in the wake of previous incidents linking these products to serious health complications, including blindness and maternal deaths.
The CDSCO’s alarming findings stem from rigorous tests conducted at official laboratories across the nation. Among those flagged are Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Eye Drops, which previously prompted a recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to sterility issues that have led to infections and vision loss. Disturbingly, three batches from manufacturer Martin & Brown Biosciences Pvt Ltd have failed quality checks related to pH, sterility, and dosage.
Additionally, the alert highlighted the dangers of Compound Sodium Lactate Injection (Ringer’s Lactate), linked to maternal deaths in Karnataka. The latest flagged batches manufactured by Aculife Healthcare Pvt Ltd also failed sterility tests, reminiscent of previous batches that resulted in tragic consequences for patients following cesarean sections.
The alert not only concerns acute cases but also spans vital life-saving drugs critical for emergency and surgical care. Notable among these drugs, Bupivacaine Hydrochloride Injection, has been found to contain particulate matter, which can pose serious risks if introduced into the bloodstream.
Chronic Condition Medications Fail Quality Tests

Essential medications like Phenytoin Sodium and Levetiracetam Tablets for epilepsy did not meet necessary specifications, risking breakthrough seizures for patients reliant on them. Similarly, antidiabetic combinations such as Teneligliptin-Metformin exhibited assay failures, threatening patients with uncontrolled blood sugar levels.
The Presence of Spurious Drugs
In what has become increasingly alarming, the CDSCO has also reported spurious drugs entering the pharmaceutical supply chain. A batch of Nandrolone Decanoate Injection and D’mex Colecalciferol Tablets have been flagged as potentially counterfeit, with manufacturers denying their production. This escalates fears about the proliferation of counterfeit drugs, further complicating an already challenging health landscape.
