Indian forest officials have launched an investigation into a controversial photoshoot after a prominent Russian photographer painted a 65-year-old elephant bright pink. The images, featuring the elephant named Chanchal, were captured by conceptual photographer Julia Buruleva during an art expedition in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Initially posted on her Instagram in December, the photos resurfaced this month, triggering a firestorm of social media backlash.
Animal rights activists have accused Buruleva of animal cruelty, raising concerns over the ethical treatment of Chanchal, who was decorated with non-toxic powder for a brief ten-minute session atop an abandoned temple. “I believe it is important to distinguish between situations where animals are genuinely harmed and those where assumptions may not fully reflect the actual conditions,” Buruleva stated in her defense, insisting that no distress was caused to the elephant.
The reaction from the online community varied widely, with many condemning what they perceive as a glorification of animal exploitation. “This is pure animal abuse,” read one popular comment. As Buruleva noted, however, elephants in Jaipur are often painted for traditional ceremonies, prompting a complex conversation about local customs versus animal welfare.
Shadik Khan, Chanchal’s owner, has stressed that the elephant was no longer used for rides and was cared for throughout the shoot. Tragically, Chanchal passed away in February due to old age, as Khan confirmed.
