Trump Advocates for Palestinian Resettlement Amid Gaza Conflict
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) — In a bold assertion during a recent press conference, President Donald Trump expressed a controversial desire for Jordan, Egypt, and other neighboring Arab nations to significantly increase their acceptance of Palestinian refugees from the beleaguered Gaza Strip. Trump suggested that such actions could facilitate a sweeping transformation of the region, which he described as a “virtual clean slate” after years of conflict and devastation.
During a 20-minute session with reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized his strong pro-Israel stance by announcing the lifting of restrictions on sending heavy munitions to Israel—specifically, 2,000-pound bombs—an action he justified by stating, “Because they bought them.” This decision represents a departure from former President Joe Biden’s policy, which temporarily halted the use of such armaments to mitigate civilian casualties amid Israel’s military engagements against Hamas.
Reflecting on the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, Trump indicated that resettling displaced Palestinians could be a pathway to facilitating peace. “I’d like Egypt to take people,” he said, estimating that around one and a half million individuals could potentially be relocated. He commended Jordan for its past efforts to receive refugees and stressed the importance of addressing what he called the “mess” in Gaza.
Yet, this proposal raises significant concerns regarding Palestinian identity, culture, and the historical connection to the land. The suggestion of relocating such a large group of people has prompted critiques, highlighting the complexity and sensitivity of the situation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude for Trump’s support but did not address the refugee issue directly.
The ongoing violence, triggered by Hamas’s large-scale attack against Israel on October 7, has led to significant casualties and escalated humanitarian crises. While a ceasefire currently holds, tensions remain high, particularly regarding the fate of hostages and the potential resumption of conflict should negotiations falter.
