Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School Student Awarded $2,000 Scholarship
New Ulm, MN – In a shining example of dedication and ambition, Karlee Prahl, a junior at Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Minnesota Association of Townships (MAT). She is one of only five high school juniors honored with this prestigious recognition for 2024.
Karlee is the daughter of Brenda and Donovan Prahl of New Ulm and is known for her diverse interests, which include studying anatomy and science, sports like tennis and softball, and an active role at her job as a waitress at George’s Steak House. Reflecting on her commitments, she shared, “I enjoy lifting weights and running several times a week,” emphasizing her dedication to physical fitness and wellness.
Her ambitions reach beyond the classroom as she serves in the Minnesota Air National Guard’s 133rd Airlift Wing. She envisions a future in exercise science, aiming to study at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities or Duluth and pursue a career as a flight medic. "Military service is part of my family," she noted, highlighting the legacy of service with her two older brothers in the Air Force and her sister in the Army.
The MAT scholarship is open to all 11th-grade students in Minnesota, whether enrolled in public, private, or parochial schools, and applicants are evaluated by an independent panel. This year’s essay theme challenged students to explore the impact of broadband internet access on rural residents, along with the associated challenges and potential government policies to address these issues.
Karlee’s essay articulated how internet access enhances education, healthcare, economic opportunities, communication, and even emergency services in rural communities. She wrote, “Internet connectivity holds immense potential…opening avenues for remote work and enhancing productivity in sectors like agriculture,” underscoring the transformative power of technology in bridging gaps.
In her concluding remarks, she advocated for comprehensive policies to make internet access affordable, stating, “Policies should be established at all levels of government that allow internet connectivity to be affordable and accessible to everyone.” This reflects a commitment not just to her future but also to the well-being of her community, resonating with the biblical principle of serving others.
The essence of this award is not merely academic excellence but the application of knowledge to improve lives—a theme echoed in Scripture: “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (Colossians 3:23, NIV). Karlee’s achievements exemplify a heart for service and a drive to enhance the lives of those around her, aligning with the values of humility and diligence espoused in Christian teachings.
As we reflect on Karlee’s journey, it invites us all to consider our own paths and how we might contribute positively to our communities. What can you do today to help connect others to opportunities that lead to growth and improvement? In each of us lies the potential to impact others profoundly when we approach our endeavors with intention and compassion.
