What Jesus teaches about Gratitude

Introduction

In the busyness of our modern lives, it’s easy to forget to pause and give thanks. Yet gratitude is a practice that Jesus understood and encouraged throughout his teachings. In our journey with Christ, He teaches us the importance of a grateful heart and shows us that gratitude is not just a one-time act of saying “thank you,” but a lifelong attitude that transforms our relationship with God and with one another.

This short bible study will explore what Jesus teaches about gratitude, and how we can cultivate a spirit of thankfulness in our daily lives.

Bible Verse

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

Meaning

In this verse, Paul instructs believers to give thanks in ALL circumstances. This suggests that gratitude is not conditioned by our current situation but is a consistent mindset we should maintain. When we express gratitude even in challenging times, we acknowledge our faith in God’s providence and sovereign will. It pleases Him when we give thanks, as it shows our trust in Him.

Jesus displayed this attitude of gratitude throughout His life. He thanked His Father for hearing Him (John 11:41), for revealing truth to the simple-hearted (Luke 10:21), and even in His final moments, for the cup He had to bear (Matthew 26:27).

Actions to Take

  • Keep a gratitude journal and list at least three things you are thankful for each day.
  • Make it a daily practice to say a prayer of thanks to God, recognizing His blessings both big and small.
  • Express your gratitude to people in your life. A simple note, gesture, or word can be a great encouragement to somebody.

Journal Prompts

  • What is one thing that you’re grateful for today and why?
  • Describe a difficult situation in your life where you found something to be grateful for.
  • How have you seen God working through the things you’re grateful for?

Prayer

Dear Lord, Help me to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Teach me to find joy in every circumstance and to trust in Your unfailing love and provision. Let my heart overflow with thankfulness and let it shape my thoughts, words, and actions. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
