In 1 Corinthians 13:4, the apostle Paul gives us a beautiful description of what true love looks like. He says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” This verse reminds us that true love is not just a feeling, but a deliberate choice to put others before ourselves.
Love is patient. It doesn’t demand instant gratification or expect everything to go perfectly. Instead, it waits with grace and understanding, knowing that good things take time.
Love is kind. It doesn’t seek to hurt or tear down, but to uplift and encourage. It is empathetic and compassionate, showing kindness even in the face of adversity.
Love does not envy. It doesn’t covet what others have, but is content with what it has been given. It rejoices in the blessings of others, rather than feeling jealous or resentful.
Love does not boast. It doesn’t brag about its accomplishments or seek recognition for its good deeds. Instead, it humbly serves others with a pure heart, seeking only the well-being of those around them.
Love is not proud. It doesn’t think of itself as better than others or act with arrogance. Instead, it remains humble and grounded, recognizing that all of our worth comes from God.
As we strive to embody the characteristics of true love outlined in 1 Corinthians 13:4, may we seek to love others as Christ loves us. Let us be patient, kind, content, humble, and always ready to show love to those around us, reflecting the love of our Savior to the world.
