Devotional: Welcoming the Stranger – Embracing Our Christian Duty to Serve Immigrants

Scripture Reading:
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” — Hebrews 13:2 (ESV)

Reflection:
As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His love and compassion in every aspect of our lives. One of the most profound ways we can embody this calling is by welcoming the stranger among us, particularly immigrants seeking refuge and a better life. In a world often marked by division and fear, our Christian duty compels us to extend open arms and loving hearts to those who are different from us.

In the Bible, we see countless examples of God’s heart for the sojourner. From the Israelites, who were reminded to care for the foreigner in their midst (Exodus 22:21), to Jesus Himself, who embraced the marginalized and disenfranchised, our faith is built on the foundation of hospitality and kindness. The phrase “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31) transcends geographical and cultural barriers. It calls us into action, urging us to become advocates for those who may feel voiceless.

Educate:
Understanding the narratives and struggles faced by immigrants is an essential first step in fulfilling this call. Many arrive in search of safety, opportunity, or simply a chance to thrive. They come bearing stories of resilience and hope, though they often confront challenges ranging from language barriers and legal hardships to cultural adjustments and isolation.

By educating ourselves about the realities of immigration, we equip ourselves to better love and serve these individuals. This might involve engaging with local immigrant communities, volunteering with organizations that support refugees and asylum seekers, or simply taking time to listen to the stories of those around us.

Encouragement:
Welcoming the stranger does not require us to have all the answers; it requires a willingness to be present. Each act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to a greater culture of inclusion. When we offer hospitality—whether through a warm meal, a listening ear, or simply a smile—we mirror the heart of Jesus.

Remember the words of Matthew 25:35: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” This invitation beckons us to recognize that in serving others, we serve Christ Himself.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to see Your image in everyone we encounter, especially those who are outsiders in our communities. Grant us compassionate hearts and teach us to embrace the stranger with love and hospitality. Open our eyes to the stories of those around us and ignite in us a passion to serve and advocate for the marginalized. May we always remember that in welcoming them, we welcome You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Call to Action:
This week, challenge yourself to reach out to someone from a different background. It could be a neighbor, a co-worker, or a local immigrant organization. Invite them for coffee, listen to their story, and learn about their experiences. Look for opportunities to serve, advocate, and celebrate diversity in your community. Together, let’s honor our calling to love and welcome the stranger, reflecting the inclusive love of Christ.
