Bible Verse

Hebrews 12:1-2, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Meaning

The passage begins by identifying the ‘great cloud of witnesses,’ referring to the heroes of faith mentioned in the previous chapter. The message here is that as believers we are part of a wonderful faith heritage. We also need to lay aside every weight and sins that easily ensnare us to ensure we aren’t hindered in running the race.

The race metaphor emphasizes the need for endurance. The Christian life is not always easy, but we are encouraged to stay the course despite hardships or setbacks. The joy and reward that await us outweigh any transient struggles.

Jesus is identified as “the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” He ran the race flawlessly, obediently enduring the cross for the joy awaiting Him. We’re reminded to fix our eyes on Him as we run our races. This means seeking His will, imitating His obedient and sacrificial life, and depending on His strength to endure trials and temptations.
