Gut Bacteria Spread Between People — Not Just Through Food

Gut bacteria spread between people, not only through food. A Nature study found some gut microbes crossed continents within decades — here is what that means.

You already know the story about gut health. Eat more fibre. Eat less sugar. Take the yoghurt with the live cultures in it. Your gut is a garden, and you are the gardener.

A study published in Nature in 2026 by a team at the University of Vienna adds something that story leaves out. Gut bacteria spread between people. Not only through what you eat — through who you are near.

And a few of them, it turns out, travelled a very long way to reach you.

How gut bacteria spread between people

This part is not brand new, and it is worth saying so plainly.

In 2023, a large international team published work in Nature on person-to-person transmission of the gut and oral microbiomes. They looked at more than 9,700 stool and oral samples from 20 countries across five continents, and found more than ten million instances of two people carrying the same bacterial strain.

Mothers and infants shared the most. Around half of the strains from species they had in common were the same during infancy, and sharing was still detectable at much older ages. People who lived together shared strains too. So did people who simply lived in the same population.

So we already knew microbes move between us. What the Vienna team did was ask a harder question: which ones, and how far?

“Gut bacteria” turned out to be the wrong unit

The new study was led by Xiaoqian Annie Yu and Martin F. Polz at the University of Vienna’s Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science. They used an approach called reverse ecology: instead of counting which species are present, they read the genomes of thousands of bacterial isolates and worked backwards from the DNA to work out what each one had adapted to.

What they found should change how you read every gut-health headline from here on.

Many of the species we name and count — the ones that show up on a microbiome test result — are not one thing. Each is several evolutionarily distinct populations living under the same name, each suited to different conditions inside the gut. Some of those populations tracked with advanced age. Others tracked with inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

Same species. Different populations. Different associations.

The researchers were direct about what that implies. Because most microbiome research does not tell these populations apart, it is genuinely hard to know which bacteria are linked to a disease and which simply happened to be in the room. That is a caveat they placed on their own field, and it may be the most useful sentence in the whole study.

It is also a clue as to why “good bacteria” and “bad bacteria” advice keeps contradicting itself. If the meaningful unit is smaller than the species, then a great deal of research counting species has been comparing things that only look alike from the outside.

The part with no comfortable precedent: continents in decades

Some of these bacterial populations are highly competitive. A useful mutation appears, that lineage pushes out its close relatives, and what is left is a very uniform population — a genome-wide sweep.

The Vienna team found that these winning populations do not stay put. They spread across large distances, expanding across continents within only a few decades.

Decades. Not millennia.

Global spread on a human timescale is a pattern scientists mostly associate with pathogens — the organisms we track and worry about. These are ordinary gut bacteria, the kind nobody was watching, moving the same way.

Which means the chain does not end with the people you know. Something living in you may have been in a person on another continent within living memory, arriving through a line of people you will never meet.

What this does and does not mean for you

It is worth being careful here, because this is exactly the kind of finding that gets stretched.

It is not evidence that health is contagious. It is not evidence that mood, or personality, or character passes between people through bacteria. Nobody showed that. What was shown is narrower and stranger: particular bacterial strains move from person to person, and the ones that compete well can travel remarkably far, remarkably fast.

It also does not mean food stopped mattering. Diet still shapes which of these populations can survive in you once they arrive. So do medicines — a separate study of thousands of people found that many common drugs left traces on gut bacteria years after the last dose. The Vienna work adds a third force alongside those two, and it is the one almost nobody was accounting for: proximity.

None of this is medical advice, and there is nothing here to buy. No supplement hands you a particular population, and no test sold to the public reads at the resolution this study used.

The proximity nobody was measuring

Sit with how strange this is for a moment.

You have been told your whole life that you are what you eat. It seems you are also, in a small and quite literal way, who you sit near. The rooms you spend your time in are doing something to your body that no food label accounts for.

And most people are in fewer rooms than they used to be. Home and work, and not much in between. The loss of those ordinary in-between places, where people are simply near one another without a reason, has been described carefully for decades, almost always as a social problem. It may quietly be a biological one as well.

Long before anyone had a microscope, people writing about God kept reaching for a description that sounded like poetry and reads now a little like anatomy: that a person is not a sealed unit, that we are joined to one another like parts of one body, and that being cut off from other people is not only sad but a kind of injury. It was never meant as a compliment about teamwork. It was meant as a description of what human beings actually are.

They had no way of knowing how literally that would hold up at the scale of a single cell.

Where that leaves you

You cannot choose your bacteria. You never could.

But this study puts one small, ordinary fact in a different light. Sitting close to people is not nothing. Sharing a meal is not nothing. Being in the same room is not nothing. You leave something behind, and something is left in you, and it happens whether or not the conversation went well.

Loneliness already shows up in the body in ways researchers can measure — it travels alongside poor sleep, among other things. Now it looks as though the traffic runs both directions. Nearness leaves a physical footprint.

So the next time you are weighing up whether it is worth the effort to go — the meal, the visit, the walk with someone — it may help to know that your body has been keeping a record of it all along.
