Escalating Unrest in Pakistan: Protests, Sectarian Violence, and Internet Disruptions Amid Calls for Justice

By Noor Ul Huda, JURIST Correspondent in Pakistan

The final week of November brought alarming developments in Pakistan, as protests erupted across major cities and violence gripped regions already fraught with tension. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore saw significant unrest, culminating in a large protest organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad’s D-Chowk on November 24. This demonstration, intended to showcase dissent, devolved into chaos and violence, resulting in casualties, injuries, and a wave of arrests.

Amnesty International condemned the authorities for what they described as a brutal crackdown on protesters, noting that the mass detentions and the shutdown of mobile internet services reflected a broader "pattern of intolerance" for the right to assemble peacefully. As Babu Ram Pant, deputy regional director for South Asia at Amnesty International, pointed out, these actions illustrate an increasing suppression of dissent in Pakistan, reminiscent of earlier crackdowns on Baloch and Pakhtun protesters. The call for a thorough investigation into these incidents stands as a poignant reminder of the universal human rights principle that emphasizes the dignity and sanctity of every human life.

Tragically, multiple reports indicated that security forces may have caused the deaths of several demonstrators during the Islamabad protests. Despite hospitals denying the receipt of casualties, the PTI claimed that many activists had been shot amidst the violence. The arrest of journalist Matiullah Jan, who sought to investigate these figures, further compounded concerns regarding press freedom and the burgeoning trend of fabricated charges against critics of the state.

In addition to protests, sectarian violence erupted in Parachinar, Kurram District, documented as one of the deadliest outbreaks in recent times. Following clashes between Alizai and Bagan tribes, the death toll surged to astonishing levels, peaking with the slaughter of innocents, including women and children. Such violence not only disrupts the fabric of society but stands in stark contrast to the biblical call for peace and love among neighbors. As Christ teaches in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

With the main routes rendered impassable and communication severely hindered, the region’s access to essential goods plummeted, inducing fears of scarcity. Authorities dispatched a high-level delegation to stabilize the area, desperate to restore calm and cooperation among the warring factions. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s directive to dismantle tribal dugouts and demand the surrender of arms poses a grim reminder of the lengths to which authorities may sometimes go to restore order—a move harkening back to the biblical admonition to pursue peace boldly, yet wisely.

As December dawned, the entire nation continued to grapple with internet disruptions that compounded the already tense atmosphere, highlighting the struggles of individuals reliant on digital platforms for communication and work. Minister of State Shaza Fatima noted that the outages were not due to governmental overreach, but rather underscored the pressing need for a stable digital infrastructure—reflective of the greater vision for community and connectedness espoused in the teachings of Jesus.

As Pakistan stands at a crossroads, turbulent yet hopeful, it beckons a collective examination of our duties toward one another, to foster peace, support our communities, and uphold justice. Each moment of unrest provides an opportunity to reform perspectives and practices, echoing the Scriptures’ wisdom in Ecclesiastes 3:8: "A time for peace, and a time for war."

In these challenging times, let us encourage one another to be peacemakers, seeking not merely an absence of conflict but the presence of justice, compassion, and community upliftment. As we approach 2025, it may serve us well to reflect on how each one can contribute to a more harmonious and equitable society, underpinned by love for our neighbors—a timeless biblical principle that has the power to heal and restore.
