Moscow Bookstore Fined for "LGBTQA+ Propaganda": A Closer Look
In a striking development for freedom of expression and literature in Russia, a Moscow court has imposed significant fines on the independent bookstore Falalster and its founder, Boris Kupriyanov. The fines, amounting to 800,000 rubles (approximately $10,000) for the store and 100,000 rubles (about $1,300) for Kupriyanov, relate to charges of promoting "LGBTQA+ propaganda." This case mirrors a growing trend of legal pressures on bookstores selling literature deemed inappropriate by authorities.
The charges emerged after Falalster sold titles such as “More Happy Than Not” by Adam Silvera and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” by Emily M. Danforth. The court found that these books "propagandized non-traditional relationships and sex change," a premise Kupriyanov vehemently disputes. He maintains that the books are legal, stating they do not appear on any prohibited lists and were not considered problematic until now.
A Question of Expertise and Fairness
Kupriyanov has raised critical questions about the validity of the expertise that labeled the books as problematic. He expressed concern over not being informed of the expert analysis or his rights during the trial process, further complicating the case’s perceived fairness. "If there are complaints about our 38,000 books," he challenged, "the expert should read them all first."
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Earlier this year, Kupriyanov faced similar penalties for selling “On the Way to Magadan,” a work by Belarusian anarchist Ihar Alinevich, deemed “undesirable” by Russian authorities.
