Urban Adult Contemporary Stations Battle for Top Spot in Nielsen Ratings

In a heated competition for listenership, two major urban adult contemporary radio stations are leading the pack in Nielsen’s summer and fall 2024 ratings. MediaCo’s WBLS New York and Audacy’s “94.7 The Wave” KTWV Los Angeles are neck and neck, each boasting a cume delivery of approximately 1.43 million listeners among persons aged 6 and older. With WBLS edging ahead by a mere 1,900 listeners, the race highlights an exciting period for urban AC radio.

WBLS has a storied history rooted in R&B since the mid-1970s but transitioned to the urban AC format in 2004. Conversely, KTWV has embraced this format since 2013, showcasing a vibrant selection of contemporary and classic hits that resonate with audiences on both coasts. As these stations vie for dominance, one can’t help but reflect on the harmony and connection often achieved through music—a principle echoed throughout the Scriptures.

Ranking third is “Majic 102.1” KMJQ Houston, followed closely by two other well-established stations: iHeartMedia’s “V103” WVAZ Chicago and WDAS-FM Philadelphia, which have been cultural staples in their respective markets for decades. The significance of these stations extends beyond entertainment; they foster community ties and promote messages of love and unity. As noted in Proverbs 27:17, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Just as these stations encourage camaraderie through shared musical experiences, so too can we support one another in our journey of faith.

Atlanta takes the spotlight for being the only market with multiple representatives in the top ten, with Cox Media Group’s “Kiss 104.1” and Urban One’s “Majic” claiming sixth and seventh place, respectively. Furthermore, CMG’s “Hot 105” WHQT Miami, securing the tenth position, has consistently delivered the highest audience share in its market for 25 consecutive Nielsen surveys, reflecting a loyal listener base built on connection and community.

The eighth and ninth spots are held by Howard University’s WHUR in Washington, D.C., and “Smooth R&B 105.7” KRNB Dallas. WHUR, a pioneer of the “Quiet Storm” format, introduced a softer, more reflective side to R&B back in 1976, enriching the listening experience for those seeking solace and inspiration through music. As we consider the calming power of music, we are reminded of Psalm 100:1, “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!” This verse beautifully encapsulates the joy and reverence music can inspire in our lives.

In this dynamic landscape, the interplay between competition and collaboration in urban AC radio serves as a metaphor for our own lives. Engaging with one another in our communities—whether through shared interests like music or through acts of kindness—can lead to stronger bonds and a more profound understanding of purpose.

As you reflect on the vibrant world of urban adult contemporary radio, consider how you might emulate this spirit of connection in your own life. Seek opportunities to uplift those around you, and remember that community is built on the harmonious contributions of each individual. Engage, connect, and let the music inspire a deeper sense of unity in your everyday journey.
