New Children’s Book Inspires Young Scientists to Embrace Curiosity and Wonder

MCLEAN, Va., December 9, 2024 – The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) has unveiled its latest offering aimed at engaging young readers with the world of science. Wild Wonderings: Scientists and Their Questions, authored by best-selling writer Jessica Fries-Gaither, is designed to spark curiosity in children from grades 3-5, blending scientific inquiry with literacy in an imaginative way.

Fries-Gaither’s book invites children into a vibrant realm of scientific exploration, showcasing the importance of asking questions—an essential element of scientific discovery. “Wild Wonderings is an exciting new resource that aims to make science exploration fun for kids by combining the power of inquiry with the joy of discovery,” said Cathy Iammartino, Chief Product Officer at NSTA. This innovative approach reflects the timeless truth found in Proverbs 18:15, “The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.”

As children delve into the pages of Wild Wonderings, they will encounter mini-biographies of nine groundbreaking scientists, including Stephen Hawking and Margaret Nice. The book employs rhyming text and vivid illustrations, making science relatable while encouraging children to formulate their own questions—a vital skill that aligns closely with Jesus’ teachings on curiosity and seeking truth.

Fries-Gaither, a seasoned educator, emphasizes that “asking questions is at the heart of science,” creating a tangible connection between kids’ everyday experiences and professional scientific work. Such guidance resonates with biblical principles that celebrate knowledge and understanding as gifts. As Psalm 111:10 reminds us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding.”

Beyond enhancing literacy skills, Wild Wonderings serves as a gentle reminder of our responsibilities to cultivate curiosity and compassion in our young ones. This brush with science not only provides educational benefits but also encourages children to recognize their place in God’s creation, inspiring them to explore their own gifts and talents further.

Jessica Fries-Gaither’s latest contribution to the NSTA Kids™ collection is now available for purchase at major retailers, priced at $15.99 for NSTA members and $19.99 for nonmembers. The book can also be obtained through local bookstores and libraries.

As we reflect on the significance of nurturing inquisitive minds, let’s take inspiration from the insight of Jesus himself. In Matthew 7:7, we are encouraged: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Embracing a spirit of curiosity can lead us to greater understanding and discovery—both academically and spiritually.

In this season of exploration, let’s encourage our young learners to ask bold questions and discover the wonders around them, fostering a love for learning that mirrors the heart of our Creator.
