Local Museum Hosts Unique Exhibit Featuring Sculptor’s “Fantasy in Action”
In a captivating blend of art and cultural commentary, the Museum of the Southwest presents an exhibit titled “GIANT,” featuring the remarkable work of sculptor Womack. With this exhibition, Womack hopes to showcase his large-scale pieces in an environment worthy of their size, asserting, “This is amazing because there’s so much space around (to hang) the pieces.”
Womack’s journey to sculpting is as intriguing as his art. After more than 30 years in advertising and marketing, he transitioned to sculpture, drawing inspiration from the vast world of branding and consumerism. “My work is largely inspired by ads and company iconography,” he noted, indicating a desire to critically engage with the cultural landscape he once helped shape.
The title “GIANT” aptly reflects the exhibit, as it showcases oversized American memorabilia transformed into striking sculptures. While several pieces have found homes in museums and universities, many have been nestled within Womack’s loft until this meaningful exhibition opportunity arose in Midland. "One of the big issues with creating work of this size is shipping it," he revealed, detailing the logistical challenges that lay behind the successful unfolding of this event.
The interest in showcasing Womack’s work aligns with the museum’s commitment to host innovative exhibitions. “Any time that you can help an artist do their first (exhibit), that’s a great position to be in,” said Kristie Jumper, treasurer of the Museum of the Southwest’s board of directors. “We hope that the people of Midland enjoy it as well.”
This collection boasts 25 pieces, with plans to add two more throughout the summer months, enhancing the dynamism of the exhibition with kinetic elements and vibrant LED lights. “Hopefully everybody has a great time; (the exhibit has) lots of movement… so very fun and interactive,” Womack expressed enthusiastically, inviting everyone to engage with his imaginative vision.
In Proverbs 22:29, it states, "Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men." Womack’s artistic journey exemplifies the transformative power of dedication and creativity, connecting with something larger than himself. It reminds us that when we share our gifts—whether artistic, professional, or otherwise—we make an impact that extends beyond ourselves, contributing vibrantly to our community.
As visitors explore “GIANT,” they are encouraged to consider the spiritual dimensions of creativity and expression, reflecting on how our talents can be a gift to others. Just as Womack’s art brings moments of joy and reflection, may we each find ways to express our own gifts in uplifting and meaningful ways.

Q&A about
I’m curious about the GIANT art exhibit at the Museum of the Southwest. How can art strengthen my faith?
Art has a unique way of expressing God’s beauty and creativity, much like His creation itself. Engaging with art can deepen your appreciation for the world God has made, as seen in Revelation 21:18, which describes the New Jerusalem adorned with precious stones. This exhibit might inspire you to see God’s presence in the creativity around you, enriching your spiritual journey.
How can I find God’s presence in such a large and modern art exhibit?
Experiencing a large art exhibit can remind us of the majesty of God’s creation, reflecting the diversity of His gifts. Just as Jesus spoke of the multitude in the feeding of the 5,000, peace can be found in the midst of a crowd if we look for God’s handiwork in every detail (Mark 6:34-44). Allow the art to open up a dialogue with God, where you can see His love poured into every creation.
Is it okay to appreciate secular art or exhibits as a Christian?
As Christians, we can appreciate beauty wherever we find it, acknowledging that all creativity ultimately stems from God, the ultimate Creator. Colossians 3:17 encourages us to do everything in the name of Jesus, including engaging with art, which can serve as a conversation starter about faith and our worldview. Viewing secular art through the lens of your faith can enhance your understanding of God’s influence on culture.
How should I approach my experience of the GIANT art exhibit with my family?
Approaching this exhibit as a family can be a bonding experience, allowing you to discuss and reflect on God’s creativity. Ephesians 6:4 encourages parents to bring up their children in the training and instruction of the Lord, and discussing art can be a wonderful way to weave faith into everyday experiences. Encourage open conversations about what the pieces evoke and how they relate to God’s love and truth.
