Rural Communities in Northwest Alabama Gain High-Speed Internet Access: A New Dawn for Connectivity
In a significant milestone for rural connectivity, U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt, Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, and Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger gathered with community leaders to celebrate the completion of Tombigbee Electric Cooperative’s ambitious fiber-to-home internet project. This $145 million initiative, carried out under the Freedom FIBER brand, promises high-speed internet access to over 100,000 residents across eight counties in Northwest Alabama.
The event held at Tombigbee Electric’s headquarters in Hamilton attracted more than 250 attendees, illustrating the community’s enthusiasm. Britton Lightsey, president and CEO of Tombigbee Electric Cooperative, articulated a vision deeply rooted in the cooperative’s mission to uplift rural communities. He drew a parallel to the Rural Electrification Act of 1936, emphasizing the ethical imperative to ensure that “no one is left behind.” This call mirrors the principles championed by Jesus, who advocated for care and attention to those on the margins of society.
Rep. Aderholt expressed pride in the project’s completion, stating, “Today, thanks to the leadership and vision of Tombigbee Electric Cooperative, that mission has been accomplished.” The cooperative embarked on this journey in 2017, laying over 4,200 miles of fiber and connecting more than 27,000 customers. The fulfilment of this mission reflects the biblical call to serve one another, as seen in Galatians 5:13, which encourages using our freedom to serve others in love.
The initiative stands out not only for its technological achievements but also for its steadfast commitment to inclusivity. Lightsey stressed that Tombigbee aimed to “serve the entire area” rather than selectively picking customers, setting a precedent for service that resonates with the foundational Christian principle of love thy neighbor.
As the cooperative continues to connect about three dozen new customers daily, the sincerity of its customer service is evident. Lightsey took pride in their local support, noting, “If you have any issue, you are calling Hamilton, Alabama. You’re not calling another country or even another state.” This approach embodies the spirit of community that the Bible encourages among believers, fostering a sense of belonging that enhances collective well-being.
