Walla Walla Community Comes Together for Annual Book Sale Fundraiser
As the Southgate Center Market closed its doors, a new chapter began for the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Walla Walla Branch. They turned a challenge into an opportunity by finding a fresh location for their annual book sale drop box, now situated at Plaza Safeway on Second Avenue. This shift illustrates the principle of resilience that’s often celebrated in community spirit.
Beth Kreger, a member of AAUW, facilitated the agreement with Plaza Safeway, creating a convenient drop-off spot for book donations. Co-chair Kay Raddatz expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “We so appreciate their kindness. And AAUW members continue to be grateful for the community’s generous donations.” Through collective goodwill, local residents contribute to a cause greater than themselves, aligning with the biblical call to love and serve one another.
Every donation made at these drop boxes goes towards funding scholarships for local women returning to college, as well as supporting various educational projects and events. Raddatz noted the significant volume of contributions, highlighting that last year alone, the AAUW collected 1,771 boxes of books, selling 1,526 of them. The remaining books are categorized into 40 different genres, appealing to a wide range of readers and collectors alike.
The upcoming 2026 book sale is slated for February 20-22 at the Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center, expanding on its legacy as a pillar of community support. Current book donation sites include Wheatland Bakery, Grocery Outlet, and several others. For those with large donations, pickups can be arranged by calling provided numbers.
