Birmingham Youth Choir Prepares for Big Stage After Golden Buzzer Win
Birmingham residents are set to rally behind a group of talented young individuals gearing up for an exciting journey on "America’s Got Talent." The Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir will hold a concert titled “Raise the Praise: A Golden Sendoff” this Sunday at The Heights Event and Entertainment Center, aiming not only to showcase their incredible talent but also to support their upcoming trip to California for the competition.
The concert begins at 3 p.m., with tickets priced at $10. Attendees can look forward to guest performances, local vendors, and, of course, the choir that has captured hearts nationwide. This event is of vital importance as it serves as a fundraiser for their crosstown adventure, where they plan to compete live against top entertainers from across the country.
Having garnered a "golden buzzer" during the July 8 episode of Season 20, the choir moved directly into the quarterfinals, which will air on NBC on September 9. Founded in 2015, the choir consists mainly of students from Birmingham City Schools, marking a decade of effort, dedication, and community building.
“It’s been 10 years of a lot of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice,” said Akheem Lee, the founder and director of the group. Initially conceived as a one-time event for a school fundraiser, the choir flourished due to the demand and passion of young people in the community. “God had other plans,” Lee remarked, reiterating the transformative power of faith and purpose behind their musical journey.
Their mission transcends music; it’s about creating a nurturing environment where young talents can express themselves through the gospel. As stated on their ticket sales site, the choir aims to “develop musical talents through proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” The choir made an indelible impression on the judges, earning a standing ovation thanks to their uplifting performance and the evident hard work behind it.
In a moment of triumph, Simon Cowell, known for his discerning nature, praised their performance, reflecting a biblical principle of recognizing and affirming one another’s gifts. In 1 Peter 4:10, it says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” This choir embodies that teaching by sharing their talents to uplift their community and glorify a higher purpose.
As they navigate through the upcoming rounds—quarterfinals airing on September 9, with semifinals on September 16 and 17—their journey will surely inspire others. The final competition will be broadcast on September 23 and 24. For those unable to catch it live, the episodes will also be available on the streaming platform, Peacock.
In a society where individual talent can shine brightly, this choir serves as a reminder of the power of community, creativity, and faith. Their journey invites us all to examine how we can use our unique gifts to serve and uplift those around us.
As you reflect on their inspiring story, consider how your unique talents can also make a difference, reminding us that our lives are not merely about ourselves but about the collective impact we can have on our communities. Be sure to cheer on the Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir as they march toward their goal—after all, “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20). Together, let us celebrate and amplify the light that shines through their talents.
