Urgent Health Alert: Measles Diagnosed at 770 Eastern Parkway Dormitory
In a concerning development for the Crown Heights community, an Israeli bochur studying at the Central Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch—commonly known as 770 Eastern Parkway—has been diagnosed with measles. The announcement, made Tuesday, has prompted the ODA Crown Heights Health Center to urge immediate vaccinations to mitigate the risk of a larger outbreak.
The young student, who is part of the “Kevutza” program, received the diagnosis early in the day, raising alarms among local health officials. “The risk of a large-scale outbreak is real,” stated the ODA in a timely public health message.
While the ODA has not specified the exact dormitory location—whether at 749 Eastern Parkway, 755 Eastern Parkway, or others in the area—a reliable medical source indicated that the diagnosis occurred at the 755 dormitory.
Understanding the Virus
Measles, a highly contagious disease, spreads through respiratory droplets and carries symptoms like fever, cough, rash, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and diarrhea. The virus poses significant risks, particularly for young children or those with compromised immune systems. In light of this, the ODA advised residents to ensure that children and young adults are vaccinated with the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, while also being vigilant for any symptoms.
If symptoms emerge, the ODA urges individuals to call ahead when visiting medical facilities to minimize the risk of further exposure.
A Call to Community
As this situation unfolds, it’s an opportunity to reflect on community health and wellbeing, echoing biblical principles of care and concern for one another. In Galatians 6:2, we are reminded, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” This verse speaks to the importance of looking after each other, especially during health crises.
Residents are encouraged to review their vaccination records and consult with health professionals, reinforcing the significance of proactive healthcare. The ODA Crown Heights Health Center can be reached at (718) 260-4670 for queries and appointments.
