Marine Heatwave Engulfs Southeast Asia and the Pacific: A Call for Urgent Climate Action
In a stark reminder of the climate crisis, almost 40 million square kilometers of ocean around Southeast Asia and the Pacific experienced a severe marine heatwave in 2024—an expanse five times the size of Australia. This shocking figure comes from the latest report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which raises serious alarms about the future of our planet.
The WMO attributes this unprecedented event primarily to climate change, exacerbated by a series of extreme weather occurrences impacting local communities and ecosystems. The report highlights a troubling correlation: as ocean temperatures soared, the region faced devastating landslides in the Philippines, widespread flooding in Australia, and alarming glacier loss in Indonesia.
The findings indicate that the ocean in this region was 0.48°C warmer than the average recorded from 1991 to 2020. As a result, satellite data revealed sea levels rising nearly 4mm annually—significantly surpassing the global average of 3.5mm. Prof. Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the WMO, emphasized the profound impact of these changes, stating, “Ocean heat and acidification have combined to inflict long-lasting damage” on marine ecosystems.

Ben Churchill, WMO director for the region, stated, “This is a message for stronger climate action. This report shows we’re seeing things we have never seen before.” The consequences of inaction could be dire not only for the ecology but also for the economies and livelihoods of millions.
The WMO report also highlights the alarming fifth mass coral bleaching event across Australia’s Great Barrier Reef since 2016, underscoring the urgent need for responsible environmental stewardship. “We’ve never seen anything like it,” said climate scientist Assoc.
