Bird Flu Outbreak Hits U.S. — Egg Shortages and Hospitalizations Rise
As the bird flu continues its spread across the United States, the impact is becoming increasingly evident—not just in avian populations, but also at grocery stores and restaurants, where egg prices are skyrocketing due to severe shortages. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reassured the public that the current health risk remains low, despite recent reports of human cases.
In a significant development, the Wyoming Department of Health confirmed the state’s first human case of the H5N1 strain of bird flu on Friday, marking the third hospitalization attributed to this virus in the country. Ohio joined the list over the weekend when a farmer was hospitalized after contracting the illness but has since been released.
According to the CDC, there are now 70 confirmed human cases across 13 states, which have resulted in one fatality in Louisiana. Recent figures reveal that nearly 23 million birds were affected in January alone, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture reporting that over 138 million birds have been infected since February 2022.
The rising number of infections—not just among birds, but also dairy cows and even pet cats—raises questions about the broader implications of such a crisis. As communities witness increased scarcity of eggs, we are reminded of the biblical principle found in Matthew 6:26, which states, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. The states currently impacted by human cases include Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Wyoming. While the CDC assures that the risk remains low for the general population, it’s essential for communities to remain vigilant and adopt safe practices, particularly in agricultural settings.
