Goose Rescued from Mt. Shasta: A Symbol of Care and Community
SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. (KOBI/KTVZ) – In an extraordinary turn of events last month, a lone goose was spotted attempting to make its way up the formidable slopes of Mt. Shasta. While it may seem unusual for a bird to embark on such a daunting trek, what transpired highlights the essence of compassion and community care that resonates deeply with our values.
Climbing rangers from the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center discovered the goose at an elevation of 10,000 feet near Old Ski Bowl during a routine patrol. According to a Facebook post by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, this feathered climber appeared ill-prepared for the harsh conditions, wearing “only one layer of down” and lacking the necessary gear to survive.
Rather than ignoring the situation, the rangers sprang into action, showcasing the importance of responsibility and stewardship over our fellow creatures. Just like the parable of the Good Samaritan, where compassion for those in need is a guiding principle, these rangers exhibited the same selfless spirit by rescuing the stranded goose. They successfully transported it down the mountain and released it into a local pond, ensuring its safety and well-being.
This incident sheds light on the dual role of the rangers, who patrol not only to assess avalanche hazards and collect vital snow depth data but also to provide a care network for those struggling—human or animal alike. Their commitment reflects the biblical call to care for creation and to be good stewards of the world we inhabit. As stated in Genesis 1:26, “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals.’”
We are reminded here that our duties extend beyond ourselves; we are called to look after those who cannot speak for themselves and to act in kindness and generosity.
As the seasons change and we undergo our own struggles, let this story serve as a reminder that we each have a role to play in lifting others up, reflecting the heart of service that Jesus taught us.
In moments of crisis—whether it’s for a goose stranded on a mountain or a neighbor in need—let us be inspired to act with love and compassion.
As you reflect on this uplifting rescue, consider how you can embody this spirit of kindness in your own life. How can you reach out to uplift someone this week? Each small act of compassion can create ripples of positive change, reminding us of our collective responsibility to one another and to all of creation.
