Christmas with the Browns: A Tradition of Community and Creativity at Asbury University

As the fall semester races to its conclusion, students at Asbury University are preparing for the final chapel of the year, a beloved tradition known as "Christmas with the Browns." For many, this event represents more than just an opportunity to earn the last flex credits needed to meet chapel attendance requirements. It’s a celebration of community, creativity, and faith that brings together students and faculty in a meaningful way.

This year, Christmas with the Browns promises to be particularly special, as it marks the culmination of a three-year collaboration between Asbury President Dr. Kevin Brown and senior film student Sam Santrock. Since its inception in 2021, this chapel has featured scripture readings, carol singing, and an uplifting message that highlights the festive spirit of the season. Santrock’s original stories add a unique and humorous touch to the event, creatively encapsulating life on Asbury’s campus.

Santrock takes great care in crafting his narratives, drawing inspiration from the community around him. “A successful Asbury Christmas book requires a deep understanding of Asbury’s culture,” he explains, describing how his works balance humor with a celebration of community values. This creative process reflects the essence of community gathering – a biblical principle emphasized by the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:5: "so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others."

Santrock’s journey began when Dr. Brown invited him to share a story during an event at Johnson Hall. This rekindled the wisdom of Proverbs 18:16, which reminds us that "a man’s gift makes room for him." As the involvement in Christmas with the Browns grew, both Santrock and Dr. Brown sought to make the event increasingly interactive, allowing more students to participate and share their gifts.

This year’s installment, titled "An Epic Conclusion to the Asbury Christmas Saga," is a testament to Santrock’s growth and the friendships he’s forged during his time at Asbury. He plans to deliver his most ambitious story yet, pitting students against a formidable antagonist in a battle to save Christmas. This narrative not only entertains but resonates with a deeper message about the values of perseverance and collaboration.

As students gather for this cherished chapel, some out of necessity and others out of love for the community, they will experience firsthand how creativity and faith can converge to create something beautiful. The event serves as a reminder of the biblical principle of unity within diversity—the idea that while individuals bring unique strengths to the table, together they can achieve something far greater.

As the semester draws to a close, and with it an era for Santrock, the message of Christmas with the Browns transcends the specific stories being told. It invites everyone to reflect on the idea that our shared experiences and efforts can foster laughter, joy, and enduring connections, mirroring the spirit of generosity and love encouraged in scripture.

Take this opportunity to ponder the importance of community and shared gifts in your own life. How can you contribute to the stories unfolding around you, enriching the tapestry of experiences that shape your community? Remember, as Galatians 6:2 reminds us, "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." This holiday season, let us strive to uplift one another, cherishing the connections that bind us together.
