Mountain Lion Euthanized After Backyard Attack in Ketchum, ID
Ketchum, ID (CBS2) — In a startling encounter that underscores the unpredictable challenges of living in close proximity to wildlife, a mountain lion was euthanized after it killed a family pet in a Ketchum backyard on December 18. The family’s ordeal began when they let their cat into their fenced backyard, only for it to be attacked minutes later by the mountain lion. Idaho Fish and Game quickly responded to the scene, tracking the lion to Highway 75. When the trail went cold, authorities decided to set a trap at the residence, perceiving the lion’s boldness in entering a fenced area as a potential threat to both residents and their pets.
Later that day, Fish and Game officers successfully trapped a female yearling mountain lion, which was then euthanized. Craig White, Regional Supervisor of the Magic Valley Region, articulated the emotional weight of such decisions, stating, “As with any decision that we are faced with to trap and put an animal down, our staff have to make the hard call to protect area residents and their pets … when a mountain lion exhibits aggression towards people or their pets, we need to take appropriate actions.”
