Galatians 5:22 is the verse people reach for when they want the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith. What almost nobody quotes is the eleven verses around it. Seven verses earlier Paul warns the Galatian churches about biting and devouring one another. Four verses after the list he is still telling them to stop provoking and envying one another. Read that way, the nine qualities stop being a private character score and become what grows between people who had every reason to stay at war. This page carries the whole study in text: the King James wording, the verses on either side, one action for this week, and a short prayer. For the grammar of the list itself — why Paul wrote "fruit" and not "fruits" — read our longer piece on what the fruits of the Spirit are.

What Galatians 5:22 Actually Says

In the King James Version, Galatians 5:22 reads:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith," (Galatians 5:22, KJV)

The sentence does not finish. It runs straight on into the next verse — "Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law" (Galatians 5:23, KJV) — so Paul’s list of nine runs through the verse break. Anyone who has only ever looked up Galatians 5:22 has been reading seven ninths of a sentence.

Who Paul Was Writing To

Paul wrote this to the churches in Galatia, and he was not handing them a fridge magnet. The letter has a problem in it, and the problem is the people in the room.

Look at verse 15, seven verses before the list:

"But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another." (Galatians 5:15, KJV)

Then look at verse 26, four verses after it:

"Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another." (Galatians 5:26, KJV)

The fruit list is bracketed, on both sides, by people tearing each other apart.

The Works List Is a Relationship List

The list Paul sets against the fruit reads the same way. The works of the flesh in verses 20 and 21 include hatred, variance, wrath, strife and envyings. Those are not private sins. They are things you do to somebody.

Which means Galatians 5:22 is not a report card on your quiet time. It is what grows between people who had every reason to stay at war. Three of the nine qualities have their own study on this site, if you want the words themselves: goodness, meekness and self-control.

What to Do With Galatians 5:22 This Week

Stop scoring yourself on all nine. Pick the one relationship you are currently losing — the sibling who did not call, the coworker who talks over you, the person in your own house you have stopped being gentle with — and carry one word off that list into that one relationship.

Longsuffering is an old word, and it means what it sounds like: suffering something a long time without going off. So give that person the extra three seconds before you answer. Gentleness is how you say a hard thing, so say it quietly, even when you are right. And peace, in a chapter about people biting each other, is not a mood. It is what two people stop doing to each other.

One word. One person. This week. That is the test Paul actually set.

A Prayer From Galatians 5:22

Father, we have been reading this list alone, and You wrote it for us together. Grow love in us where there has been hatred, and peace where we have been biting. Give us a long fuse this week, and make us gentle in the way we speak. We are not trying to build this ourselves, so we are asking You to grow it. Amen.

Questions About Galatians 5:22

What does Galatians 5:22 mean?

Galatians 5:22 names the fruit of the Spirit: "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith." Paul is describing what grows in a person who is led by God’s Spirit, set against the "works of the flesh" he has just listed. Read in its own chapter, it is addressed to churches in open conflict, so the fruit is less a private score sheet than a description of how people in a community treat one another.

Why does Galatians 5:22 stop in the middle of the list?

Because the verse divisions were added to the Bible long after Paul wrote the letter, and this one lands mid-sentence. Galatians 5:22 lists seven qualities and the sentence finishes in Galatians 5:23 with "Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." The full fruit of the Spirit is the nine of Galatians 5:22-23 together, not the seven of verse 22 alone.

Who was Paul writing to in Galatians 5:22?

Paul wrote to the churches of Galatia, a group of congregations he had founded and was now arguing with. Seven verses before the fruit list he warns them, "if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another" (Galatians 5:15). Four verses after it he is still telling them to stop provoking and envying one another (Galatians 5:26).

Is the fruit of the Spirit about personal character or relationships?

Both, but the setting in Galatians 5 leans hard toward relationships. The works of the flesh Paul contrasts with the fruit — hatred, variance, wrath, strife, envyings — are things done to other people, not private failings. So the honest test of love, joy, peace and longsuffering is not how you feel alone, but how you behave toward the person you find hardest.

What is one practical way to apply Galatians 5:22 this week?

Stop grading yourself on all nine qualities at once. Instead, choose the single relationship that is currently going wrong and carry one word off the list into it. Longsuffering might mean three more seconds before you reply. Gentleness might mean saying a hard thing quietly even when you are right. One word, one person, one week is a test you can actually run.
