What Jesus teaches about Service

Introduction

As we journey through life, many roles and responsibilities beckon us. In all, one question remains: How can we serve others in the image of Christ? Through His earthly ministry, Jesus not only taught but also exemplified servitude. He washed the feet of His disciples, healed the sick, fed the hungry and ultimately offered His life for our salvation. Let us explore what Jesus teaches about Service and how we can incorporate His teachings in our daily lives.

Stay with us on this devotional journey and discover the joy and fulfillment that comes from a servant’s heart. You will find that in serving others, we express our love for God and manifest His Kingdom on earth.

Bible Verse

“…just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” – Matthew 20:28

Meaning

When Jesus mentioned in Matthew 20:28 that He didn’t come to be served, but to serve others, He was setting a standard for us to follow. Instead of aspiring to be masters, Jesus encourages us to aspire to be servants—a radical, counter-cultural teaching. His entire life on earth showed us what it means to be a servant: humble, selfless, and caring.

Jesus’ ultimate act of service came when He died on the cross for our sins. By giving His life as a ransom, He was serving humanity on the highest level – offering salvation, reconciliation with God, and eternal life. This is an embodiment of the selfless, sacrificial love that we are to emulate in our service to others.

Actions to Take

  1. Practice Humility – Modesty is the first step in being a servant. Acknowledge that everyone is deserving of respect and love.
  2. Serve in your Community – Whether it’s volunteering at a local soup kitchen or helping a friend in need, find ways to serve others around you.
  3. Give Generously – Time, talents, resources: do not withhold what you can give.
  4. Show Compassion – Just as Jesus did, we ought to show compassion towards those we serve.
