What Jesus teaches about Wealth and Materialism
Introduction
Welcome to another enlightening devotional. This week, we embark on a rich journey as we dig deep into what Jesus teaches about Wealth and Materialism. Our society often breeds a relentless pursuit for more, urging us to associate our worth with our wealth. However, Jesus paints a very different picture of what true wealth is. So, let’s invite the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ, to shine His transformative light on our perceptions of wealth and materialism.
You are encouraged to read on, as adopting Jesus’ perspective can bring a fundamental shift in your relationship with your possessions and ignite a newfound joy in your spiritual journey.
Bible Verse
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21
Meaning
This passage conveys an essential teaching about our relationship with material wealth and possessions. Jesus is calling us to be careful about where we store our treasures. Many times, we are swept away by the worldly notion of wealth, which is fickle, finite, and subject to loss.
However, Jesus challenges us to pursue treasures in heaven. These treasures are the internal, eternal values such as love, faith, kindness, and integrity. Their imperishable nature makes them a much safer and rewarding investment for our hearts.
Remember, the final line of this teaching is significant. Where your treasure is, your heart will also be. It highlights that what we invest in becomes the object of our affection, focus, and ultimately, an integral part of our lives.
Actions to Take
- Re-evaluate your understanding of treasure. Identify personal treasures that are not materialistic.
- Reflect on how much time and energy you are investing in accumulating earthly wealth versus heavenly wealth.
- Each day, make a conscious effort to invest more in love, faith, kindness, and other virtues.
- Actively seek opportunities to impart blessings upon others with your resources.
- Trust God with your material possessions and financial circumstances.
