What Jesus teaches about Wealth and Materialism
Introduction
As disciples on a faithful journey, we are continually reminded that our wealth and material possessions are not the measure of our worth. Instead, we should focus on serving God and seeking His kingdom. In today’s devotional, we delve into the teachings and wisdom of Jesus regarding wealth and materialism. Our Lord encourages us to lay our treasures in heaven where they are everlasting, rather than in the fleeting possessions of this world.
By seeking a deeper understanding of Jesus’s message, we can develop a healthy perspective on wealth, seeing it not as a master to serve but as a tool to be used in the service of God and humankind. Let’s take this step together, exploring the teachings of our Savior.
Bible Verse
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21
Meaning
In this scripture, Jesus is teaching us about the temporality of earthly wealth and material possessions. He warns us against putting our hearts and identities in the accumulation of worldly wealth, which is transient and vulnerable. These earthly treasures can disappear overnight due to various circumstances, and we cannot take them with us when we pass on.
Instead, Jesus advises us to store up treasures in heaven. These treasures are the intangible virtues like love, kindness, faithfulness, and peace. Investing in deeds of righteousness protects our hearts, as these heavenly treasures are eternal and cannot be stolen or destroyed.
The last part of the verse, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” is a powerful reminder. It tells us that whatever we value most in life is what will truly dominate our hearts and control our actions. Therefore, it’s important to ensure what we value aligns with God’s Will and His kingdom.
Actions to Take
- Reflect on what you value and where you are investing your time and resources.
- Pray for God’s guidance to use your resources to further His kingdom.
- Practice intentional generosity. Share your time, talents, and possessions with those in need.
- Learn to find joy and contentment in God’s love and presence, rather than in material possessions.
Journal Prompts
- What material possessions am I too attached to, and how can I change this?
- In what ways have I used my wealth or resources to serve God and others?
- How can I practice generosity more in my daily life?
- What does storing up treasures in heaven mean to me?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, guide my heart to prioritize Your kingdom above wealth and material possessions. Help me understand that true riches are found in loving You and my neighbor. Grant me the wisdom to use what I have to bless others and glorify You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
