What Jesus teaches about Gratitude
Introduction
Gratitude: a simple word with profound implications. It is an essential quality that Jesus Christ not only preached but practiced. He showed us through his actions and teachings what it means to be truly thankful, recognizing every blessing as a gift from God, large or small. In today’s fast-paced world, where we are often consumed by our desires and problems, remembering to express gratitude can be challenging.
However, reaffirming our gratitude to God opens us to his blessings, grace, and love. It brings joy, peace, and contentment in our lives. So, let’s explore together what Jesus teaches us about the virtue of gratitude and how we can implement it in our daily lives. Let’s understand the power of saying ‘Thank You’ to God!
Bible Verse
1 Thessalonians 5:18 — “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Meaning
The essence of this verse is not merely to be thankful for the good moments, but to maintain an attitude of gratitude in every circumstance. Is it easy? Most certainly not! But Jesus never promised that our path would be devoid of trials. On the contrary, he taught us that these trials can bring us closer to him and help us grow spiritually.
When Jesus served the five loaves and two fishes to the multitude (John 6:1-14), he first gave thanks to God. This wasn’t a grand feast laid down in front of him; it was meager supply barely enough for a handful of people. Yet, he expressed gratitude. This shows us that our gratitude to God shouldn’t depend on the magnitude of our blessings.
Jesus also noticed when gratitude was missing. In Luke 17:17, Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one returned to thank him. Jesus questioned where the nine were. This signifies how closely Jesus values our gratitude. He notices it as he does our love and faith.
Actions to Take
- Each day, thank God for five things. They can be as simple as a beautiful sunrise or a nourishing meal.
- When faced with trials, instead of questioning God, thank Him for the strength to endure and the opportunity to grow spiritually.
- Show gratitude to the people who make a difference in your life. Let them know that you appreciate them.
- Be the one who returns to thank Jesus. Remember the day’s blessings before you sleep and give thanks.
- Serve others, as service is the highest form of gratitude.
Journal Prompts
- Write about a situation where it was tough for you to feel grateful.
- List five blessings that you’ve taken for granted recently and reflect on their importance.
- Think about someone who has positively impacted your life. Write a letter of gratitude to them.
- Reflect on a time when gratitude changed your perspective or attitude.
- What are some ways you could practice gratitude towards God and others more regularly?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I come before you, filled with gratitude for your constant love and grace. I thank you for all the blessings you’ve bestowed upon me, both big and small. I seek your help to maintain this attitude of gratitude throughout my trials, knowing that through them, I am brought closer to you. Let my life be a constant ‘Thank You’ to you, Lord. In your name, I pray. Amen.
