Devotional: Welcoming the Stranger – Faith in Action for a Just Tomorrow

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:35-40 (NIV)

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in…”

Reflection:

In today’s world, we are often confronted with the narratives surrounding the ‘other’—those who are different, those who come from another land, those whose experiences may be vastly dissimilar to our own. Yet, in the heart of our faith lies a simple but profound command: to welcome the stranger. This call is at the core of Christianity, woven deeply into the fabric of our interactions as disciples of Christ.

Throughout scripture, we see repeated instances where God commands His people to care for the foreigner, the widow, and the orphan (Deuteronomy 10:19). This is not merely a guideline; it is an essential expression of our faith in action. When Jesus speaks of welcoming the stranger, He ties our treatment of others directly to our relationship with Him. This truth should motivate us to reflect on our attitudes towards those who might feel out of place or unwelcome in our communities.

Educate: Understanding ‘The Stranger’

In the ancient context, a "stranger" often referred to someone who was marginalized—often without family, resources, or security. Today, this includes refugees, immigrants, the unhoused, and anyone navigating the world alone. The rising challenges faced by these populations challenge us as a church to see them through the lens of divine compassion.

Statistics reveal staggering numbers of displaced individuals worldwide, many due to war, persecution, or economic hardship. This is not merely a political issue but a deeply humanitarian one. As followers of Christ, we are called to respond with action—whether through advocacy, service, or simple kindness.

By understanding their stories, we can dismantle barriers and foster environments of acceptance in our communities. Who are the strangers in your life? How can you reach out to them?

Encouragement: Action Steps

  1. Educate Yourself: Learn about the challenges facing strangers in your community. Attend forums, read books, or volunteer at local organizations that serve those in need. Knowledge empowers us to act justly.

  2. Engage: Take the time to meet someone different from you. Share a meal, listen to their story, or invite them into your community. Personal connections can transform perceptions and build bridges.

  3. Advocate: Use your voice to speak up for those who are marginalized. Write to your local representatives, participate in peaceful protests, or support policies that welcome and protect those in vulnerable positions. Advocacy is an extension of love.

  4. Pray: Lift the strangers in your community up in prayer. Pray for their safety, healing, and comfort. Ask God to soften your heart, to see them as He does, and to guide you on how to help.

Closing Prayer:

Gracious God, we thank You for the gift of Your presence in our lives. Help us to see the face of Christ in every stranger we meet. May our hearts overflow with compassion, and may our hands be filled with action as we seek to serve and welcome those who are different from us. Give us courage to break down walls of division and build up bridges of understanding and love. Lead us, Lord, into a future that reflects Your justice and mercy. Amen.

Final Thought:

As we look toward tomorrow, let us be intentional about welcoming the stranger and embodying Christ’s love in all we do. In doing so, we not only change lives; we transform our hearts and our communities into a reflection of the Kingdom of God—for a just, compassionate, and inclusive tomorrow.
