Bible Verse

“For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.” – Acts 17:28

Meaning

This particular verse is part of Apostle Paul’s speech at the Areopagus in Athens. The verse outlines a profound reality that our existence, our life, and our movements are all embedded in God. Our being itself is nothing apart from God.

Can a fish survive detached from water? Certainly not. Likewise, disconnected from God, our existence loses its essence. To “live and move and have our being” is an all-encompassing phrase that signifies our absolute dependence on Him. We thrive in Him, every heartbeat and breath is a throb of His life within us, a testimony to His excellent workmanship. We are His masterpiece, His magnificent creation, and His valuable offspring.

The second part of the verse testifies that even the poets of Athens, although non-believers, acknowledged humanity’s connection to the divine, reflecting an all-encompassing truth beyond religious barriers.

Actions to Take

  1. Take a moment each day to consciously acknowledge that your life and existence is in God.
  2. Commit to deepening your relationship with Him, by reading the Word and engaging in heartfelt prayer.
  3. Live mindfully, understanding that every movement you make stems from His immense power.
  4. Identify areas of your life where you may have forgotten God’s presence, and invite Him back in.
  5. Continually affirm to yourself and others that you are His beloved offspring, created in His divine image.
