Devotional: United in Purpose – Renewing Hearts and Bonds at the Marriage Retreat

Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Reflection:

As we gather at this marriage retreat, let us take a moment to reflect on the profound purpose of our union. The intentionality behind our coming together is to renew our hearts and fortify our bonds—reminding us that a flourishing marriage isn’t merely about coexistence but about thriving together through shared purpose.

In Ecclesiastes, we are reminded that partnership multiplies our strength and resilience. Each of us brings unique gifts, perspectives, and experiences into our marriage. It is a beautiful tapestry that, when woven together with love, encouragement, and faith, becomes a source of strength that sustains us even in life’s most challenging seasons.

Let us examine what it truly means to be "united in purpose." When we align our goals, dreams, and values, we create a shared vision that can propel our marriage forward. This unity isn’t about conformity; rather, it is about blending our individual passions into a collective purpose that honors both partners.

Consider practical ways to renew your purpose together during this retreat. Spend time in prayer and conversation about what truly matters to you both and how those passions can further deepen your bond. Are there dreams that have been set aside? Is there a calling or ministry that you’ve felt drawn to but haven’t fully engaged in? Together, you can explore these questions and reignite the flame that initially brought you together.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

We come before you today in gratitude for the gift of marriage. We ask that you bless our time at this retreat with your presence and guidance. Help us to open our hearts and to listen to one another with love and understanding. May we seek to understand your purpose for our marriage and to align our dreams and goals with yours. Strengthen our bond as we work together to renew our hearts and share in the joy of partnership. May our union become a shining example of love, commitment, and faith to those we encounter. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Action Step:

Before the retreat concludes, find a quiet moment together to reflect on your journey as a couple. Create a shared mission statement that encapsulates your unity of purpose. Write it down, display it prominently in your home, and revisit it regularly as a reminder of the commitment you share—not just as husband and wife but as partners in a purposeful life together.

As you commit to being united in purpose, remember that your marriage is a journey, an adventure crafted by both God and the love you share. Embrace it fully!
