Devotional: Love in Action – Following Christ’s Example

Scripture Reading: John 13:34-35 (NIV)

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another."

Reflection:

In a world that often prioritizes self-interest and individualism, love can sometimes feel like a lofty ideal—something nice to talk about but difficult to practice. However, Jesus redefined love as a tangible action, challenging us to embody His example in our daily lives. His directive to "love one another" was not just a suggestion; it was a commandment, rooted in the very essence of His mission on Earth.

Love in action is about more than kind words or sentiments; it’s about living out our faith in practical ways that reflect the heart of Christ. Consider the moments when Jesus showed love: He healed the sick, fed the hungry, embraced the outcasts, and laid down His life for us. None of these actions were performed from a distance; they were intimate, personal, and often sacrificial.

As we strive to follow Christ’s example, we’re called to look beyond ourselves and actively engage in the lives of others. This might mean offering a listening ear to a friend in distress, volunteering our time to serve those in need, or simply reaching out with a smile or a kind word. Love is a verb, and true discipleship is evidenced by our willingness to act in love.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your love demonstrated through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to recognize the opportunities around me to love others in tangible ways, just as You have loved me. May my actions reflect Your heart and bring glory to Your name. Teach me to love selflessly, to serve willingly, and to see every person through Your eyes. Amen.

Contemplation:

Take a moment to think about someone in your life who may need an act of love or kindness today. Ask God to show you how you can express His love to them—perhaps through a simple text, a thoughtful gesture, or a more intensive effort to meet a need. Remember that each small act of love can have a ripple effect, demonstrating the heart of Christ to the world.

Action Step:

Today, commit to one specific act of love. It could be as simple as making a phone call to check on someone or as involved as volunteering your time for a community project. Write down what you plan to do, and pray for an open heart to receive and extend God’s love through your actions.

Let your love be known, and may others see in you the light of Christ shining brightly.
