Devotional: Grace in the Grind: Loving the Unlovable
Scripture Reading:
"For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?" – Matthew 5:46 (ESV)
Reflection:
Life often presents us with people who challenge our patience, fill us with frustration, or even hurt us deeply. The workplace may introduce us to difficult colleagues; family gatherings can become complicated with relatives we struggle to connect with. In these moments, the call to love the unlovable feels daunting. Yet, this is precisely the place where grace flourishes.
Grace is not just a one-time act but a continuous flow — it is the divine influence on our hearts, prompting us to embody Christlike love. Loving the unlovable is a reflection of God’s grace in our own lives. We are often reminded that we were once "unlovable" in our rebelliousness against God, yet He chose to love us sacrificially through Jesus. Our relationships can mirror this divine grace, even when it feels tough.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, teach me to embrace Your grace in my daily life, especially in moments when love feels like the hardest choice. Help me to see others through Your eyes, to recognize their inherent worth, and to understand that everyone is on their own journey. Give me the strength to extend kindness and forgiveness, even when it feels undeserved. May my actions be a reflection of the love You show me, and may I find joy in grace, even in the grind of loving those who seem unlovable. Amen.
Contemplation:
Take a moment to think of someone in your life who you find difficult to love. Consider their struggles and the reasons behind their behaviors. How might you show them grace this week? What small act of kindness can you offer as an expression of love, however challenging it may be?
Action Step:
Choose one person this week whom you find hard to love. Make a deliberate effort to engage with them positively — perhaps through a compliment, a note of encouragement, or simply by being patient with them in conversation. Reflect on how this act impacts both of you and reminds you of the grace God has extended to you.
