Overcoming the ‘Will Not’: A Journey to Embrace God’s Will

Have you ever found yourself resisting something you knew you should do, thinking, "I will not"? Life often throws scenarios at us where our initial human instinct is to dig our heels in and refuse. However, embracing God’s will can transform our lives in ways we can’t imagine.

The Battle of the ‘Will Not’

Have you ever experienced that feeling of reluctance when faced with a task you do not want to undertake? Perhaps it’s forgiving a friend who wronged you or volunteering your time when you’re already stretched thin. These moments often lead to the inner dialogue of "I will not," where we resist what might be God’s nudgings.

Take heart in knowing you’re not alone. Even Jonah, the prophet, encountered this battle. God called Jonah to deliver a message to Nineveh, yet Jonah fled in the opposite direction, saying in his heart, "I will not" (Jonah 1:3). Much like Jonah, our initial resistance can lead us astray, but embracing God’s direction can rewrite our path and purpose.

Choose Surrender Over Resistance

Surrender is the key to overcoming this resistance. Jesus demonstrated this in the Garden of Gethsemane, facing the ultimate sacrifice. His prayer, "Not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42), embodies the profound moment of choosing God’s will over personal desire.

Here are a few practical steps to embrace surrender:

  1. Pray for Courage: Ask God for the courage and strength to accept His will, even when it feels challenging or inconvenient.

  2. Reflect on Scripture: Meditate on Bible verses that emphasize surrender and obedience, like Philippians 2:13, which reminds us that God works in us to fulfill His purpose.

  3. Seek Guidance: Speak to a spiritual mentor, pastor, or friend who can offer wisdom and support as you navigate the ‘will not’ moments.

  4. Start Small: Begin with small acts of obedience that build your faith and confidence in God’s plan.

Interactive Reflection: Personal Willingness Survey

As you ponder the ‘will not’ moments in your life, consider asking yourself:

  • What am I resisting today, and why?

  • How would surrendering my own will change my circumstances or perspective?

  • What is one small step I can take today to embrace God’s will?

Reflect on these questions prayerfully and see what transformation God might be inviting into your life.

The Joy Beyond ‘Will Not’

When Jonah eventually surrendered to God’s will, he found himself a part of one of the greatest revivals in history. Surrendering the ‘will not’ can open doors to joy, peace, and purpose that far exceed our limited understanding. It’s in this surrender that we find true freedom and fulfillment.

May Psalm 40:8, "I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart," be the song of our hearts as we seek to move past ‘will not’ into the divine ‘will.’
