Devotional: Faith and Feelings – Nurturing Your Spirit Through Emotional Intelligence
Scripture Reading: Psalm 139:1-4 (NIV)
“O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you, Lord, know it completely.”
Reflection:
In our walk of faith, we often hear that we should “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). But what about our feelings? Emotions can be powerful, sometimes overwhelming, and they often sway our judgments and responses. As we explore the relationship between faith and feelings, it’s vital to recognize that God created us as emotional beings. He understands our emotions intimately and wants us to bring our feelings to Him in faith.
Emotional intelligence (EI) allows us to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions while empathizing with others. In nurturing our spirits, EI plays a crucial role. When we acknowledge our feelings, rather than suppress them, we create space for deeper faith connections.
1. Acknowledge Your Emotions:
Just as David poured out his soul in the Psalms, allow yourself to express your feelings to God. Whether joy, fear, sadness, or frustration, bring these emotions into the light of God’s presence. He listens with a loving heart. By acknowledging our feelings, we cultivate an honest relationship with God and an understanding of ourselves.
2. Evaluate and Validate:
Why do you feel the way you do? What experiences shaped these emotions? Take time to reflect. God knows our hearts and minds, but this self-examination helps us understand our emotional responses better. When we validate our feelings, we lay the groundwork for healing and growth.
3. Align Emotions with Faith:
Our emotions can sometimes cloud our perspective. In those moments of uncertainty, turn to Scripture. God’s Word is a lamp to our feet (Psalm 119:105) and will guide us through turbulent emotions. Allow your faith to navigate feelings; let it be the anchor that stabilizes you.
Prayer Prompt:
Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing me completely. Help me to embrace my feelings and bring them to You. Teach me how to navigate my emotions with the wisdom of Your Word. Strengthen my faith that it may rise above my feelings, guiding me through life’s storms. Encourage me to grow in emotional intelligence so that I may serve others with compassion and understanding. Amen.
Action Step:
This week, take a moment each day to journal about your feelings. Write down one emotion you experience and pray about it. Ask God to reveal how you can align this feeling with His truth. Consider sharing your reflections with a trusted friend or mentor for accountability and support.
Closing Thought:
Faith and feelings are not opposed; instead, they can beautifully complement each other. By nurturing emotional intelligence, we deepen our relationship with God and better understand ourselves and others. Remember, God walks with you through every emotion, encouraging growth, healing, and a steadfast spirit. Let faith be your guide in every season of feeling.
