Devotional: Faithful Foundations: Building the Church on the Pillars of Scripture
Scripture Focus: Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV)
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock."
Reflection:
In an ever-changing world, where values and beliefs can shift with each passing day, it is more important than ever for us to build our lives—and our church—on a steadfast foundation. In Matthew 7, Jesus emphasizes the significance of listening to His teachings and actively putting them into practice. Here, He likens those who obey His words to a wise builder whose house stands firm against the storms of life.
The pillars of Scripture—such as love, grace, forgiveness, and truth—form the very bedrock of our faith and the church. Each pillar offers guidance and strength, providing a framework that can withstand external pressures and internal struggles.
Encouragement:
-
Daily Engagement with Scripture: Just as a builder consults blueprints, we too must immerse ourselves in God’s Word. Set aside time each day to read and reflect on Scripture. Choose a book of the Bible to study deeply, perhaps starting with one of the Gospels to understand Jesus’ teachings and example. Allow His words to penetrate your heart and guide your actions.
-
Apply the Pillars in Real Life: To build your life and participate in building the church, consider how the pillars of Scripture can shape your daily interactions. For example:
- Love: Show love to those around you, even to those who are difficult. This could be as simple as offering kindness to a coworker or helping a neighbor in need.
- Grace and Forgiveness: Embrace opportunities to forgive others, understanding that we all fall short. Reflect on how God has shown grace to you, and extend that same grace to others.
- Truth: Stand firm in your convictions but do so with compassion. Engage in conversations that challenge popular beliefs, ensuring you do so respectfully and lovingly.
-
Community Building: The church is not merely a building; it is a community of believers. Get involved with your local church, whether by joining a Bible study group, serving in a ministry, or simply being part of the church family that prays for one another. Building a vibrant church community provides support and encouragement as we grow in our faith together.
-
Live Out Your Faith: Take action in your community. Identify a need in your area—whether it’s volunteering for a local charity, participating in outreach programs, or even starting a small group focused on prayer or Bible study. Small acts of service can create ripples of impact, drawing others to Christ through your example.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the solid foundation of Your Word. Help us to build our lives—and the church—on the unwavering truth of Scripture. Teach us to live out the pillars of our faith in our daily lives. As we encounter storms, let us stand firm, trusting in Your promises. May our actions reflect Your love, grace, and truth so that others may see You through us. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Take Action:
Post a verse or a phrase from Scripture that resonates with you in a visible place at home or work. Let it be a reminder of the foundation upon which you are building your life, encouraging you to embody its truths each day. Additionally, consider inviting someone to join you in reading through a book of the Bible, fostering deeper connections and shared growth in faith.
