Hezbollah Spokesperson Killed in Israeli Airstrike as Violence Escalates in Lebanon and Gaza
Beirut, Lebanon — The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified after the Israeli military announced the killing of Mohammed Afif, a key spokesperson for Hezbollah, in an airstrike on Beirut on Sunday. The airstrike occurred in the Ras al-Nabaa area and was described by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a "precise, intelligence-based strike" targeting Afif as a “terrorist” leader.
Afif, who was responsible for the militant group’s media relations and served as an adviser to the late Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, has been characterized by Hezbollah as a “great media leader.” His death has drawn condolences from various factions, including the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which hailed him as “a strong and defiant voice of resistance.”
The Israeli airstrike, which occurred in broad daylight without prior warning, resulted in the deaths of four individuals, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. In a further escalation, another strike later hit a building in the Mar Elias neighborhood of Beirut, leading to additional casualties. These events mark a significant surge in violence; since 2006, only four strikes had previously targeted within Beirut’s city limits.
Israel’s renewed offensive in Lebanon comes on the heels of similar operations in Gaza, where at least 50 people were reported killed due to Israeli airstrikes on Beit Lahiya, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
