Zelienople Residents Confront Tax Hikes, Utility Increases Amid Historic Preservation Efforts
Conversation planned to protect history in Zelienople
ZELIENOPLE — Changes are on the horizon for borough residents as they face a potential 1-mill real estate tax increase along with a 3% rise in water and electric rates, contingent on the approval of a proposed $12.4 million budget by the borough council in December. This budget, which was approved for preliminary consideration on November 25, aims to address a projected $500,000 shortfall in electric funds by 2025.
Borough Manager Andrew Spencer highlighted the broader impact of rising electric capacity costs affecting regions beyond Zelienople, attributing these increases to challenges faced across the seven-state PJM region. Residents, however, may find the tax hike manageable; Spencer noted that the budget’s proposed increase would translate to an additional monthly expense of between $8 and $16 for individual property owners, with funds earmarked for borough parks.
In a move to enhance community connectivity, the council also greenlit a proposal from Cincinnati-based Omni Fiber to install high-speed fiber internet service in the borough. This "fiber-to-the-home" system, expected to roll out in January, will provide residents with a much-needed alternative to the current Armstrong service.
As Zelienople embraces modernization, efforts to preserve its historical roots are not forgotten. A public hearing on January 13 aims to discuss the introduction of the Historic District Overlay, a plan designed to protect Zelienople’s historic district. Council President Mary Hess emphasized that the guidelines would be focused on maintaining the borough’s historical character, reflecting a community commitment to stewardship reminiscent of the biblical principle found in Proverbs 24:3-4: “By wisdom, a house is built, and through understanding, it is established; through knowledge, its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”
As Zelienople residents navigate these proposed changes, there lies an opportunity to reflect on the importance of wise stewardship not just in financial matters but in preserving the values that shape their community. The challenges ahead may require sacrifice and adjustment, yet they align closely with the biblical call to care for what has been entrusted to us—a reminder that protecting what is valuable often leads to greater blessings.
In closing, the unfolding events in Zelienople serve as an encouragement to remain engaged in community development and preservation. As community members contemplate their choices, may they be inspired to consider how their actions today can foster a legacy of resilience and faithfulness for future generations. "Let us not become weary in doing good" (Galatians 6:9) as we strive to build a strong and vibrant community together.
