High-Speed Fiber Optic Internet Coming to Belmont County: A Long-Awaited Solution for Underserved Areas
BARNESVILLE — In a significant step towards closing the digital divide, Belmont County has entered into an agreement with Belmont Gig, a subsidiary of Ohio Gig, to install high-speed fiber optic internet in underserved areas of the county. This project marks a turning point for communities that have long struggled with inadequate internet access, reflecting a commitment to improving connectivity for all.
Belmont County Commissioner J.P. Dutton emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “They are providing high-speed service not on poles, but underground.” This method, while more labor-intensive, promises increased reliability and fewer outages. Currently focused on Barnesville, the project has been designed to address the needs of residents who have historically been left behind in the digital age.
Dutton noted that unlike typical upgrades that require complete line replacement, this initiative allows for enhancements that can extend the lifespan of existing infrastructure. “These lines can last for an extremely long time,” he explained, showcasing the forward-thinking approach that underpins the project.
The funding for this $2 million project originates from the American Recovery Plan Act, federal dollars allocated to support local communities. Dutton highlighted the innovative financing model, stating, “We saw an opportunity to do a loan… as that’s paid back, we can then get a second use of those dollars.” This reflects a principle of stewardship—using resources wisely and effectively for the common good.
