North Carolina Invests $48 Million in Broadband Access, Bridging Digital Divides
NORTH CAROLINA (WLOS) — In a bold move aimed at enhancing connectivity for rural communities, Governor Josh Stein has announced a significant investment of $48 million in the Completing Access to Broadband program. This initiative is poised to connect over 14,000 households and businesses with high-speed internet across 22 counties in North Carolina.
Funded by more than $14 million from broadband providers and over $33 million from the federal American Rescue Plan, this project reflects an urgent need for digital access and the commitment of the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) to bridge the digital divide. “Connecting all North Carolinians, especially in our rural areas, opens doors of opportunity,” Governor Stein remarked, emphasizing the impact such infrastructure can have on education, employment, and community engagement.

The broadband expansion will benefit various counties, including Burke, Mitchell, and Wilkes, each receiving targeted high-speed internet access through local providers. For instance, Burke County will see 113 homes and businesses connected through Foothills Broadband, LLC, while Zito Media will serve 84 locations in Mitchell County. Additional counties such as Alexander, Craven, and Guilford will also experience these vital technological advancements.
